The Founders hated democracy and went to great pains to ensure that our new government not take that form.

"Democracy will envy all, contend with all, endeavor to pull down all, and when by chance it happens to get the upper hand for a short time, it will be revengeful, bloody and cruel."

John Adams, letter to Thomas Jefferson, 16 July, 1814

A line from the movie The Patriot:

"Do I want to be ruled by one tyrant 3,000 miles away, or 3,000 tyrants one mile away?"

The Founders hated democracy

“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the vote.”
