Woman who spent £16m in Harrods revealed['Unexplained Wealth Order']
BBC ^ | 10 Oct 2018 | Dominic Casciani

A woman who spent £16m at Harrods in a decade can now be identified as Zamira Hajiyeva - the first target for the UK's new anti-corruption law.

Mrs Hajiyeva lost a legal battle to stay anonymous after the media argued the public should know the full facts.

Originally from Azerbaijan, she is the wife of an ex-state banker.

She risks losing her £15m home near the London store and a Berkshire golf course if she fails to explain the source of her wealth to the High Court.

Under the terms of the UK's first ever Unexplained Wealth Order, Mrs Hajiyeva, 55, must now provide the National Crime Agency with a clear account of how she and her husband, Jahangir Hajiyev, could afford to buy their large home in the exclusive London neighbourhood of Knightsbridge.

Mrs Hajiyeva's lawyers said the UWO "does not and should not be taken to imply any wrongdoing", by her or her husband. They have applied for permission to appeal against the order.

They have applied for permission to appeal against the order.

I'm speechless.

We need that UWO applied to our over wealthy, influence-peddling politicians...

This is why the Clintons are going on tour.

They are about to receive some money from Soros or China and they need a cover for it.

If you can’t explain it, turn it over!

Douchebag big government overreach vs. Likely Corrupt Azerbaijan creeps.

Absolutely would have to side with the Likely Corrupt Azerbaijan Creeps in this case, but it's not my country so they can do as they please.

I’m sure many, like myself, bristle at the seemingly Orwellian sounding nature of this story. But know that this woman’s husband is a convicted criminal who embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars while running the International Bank of Azerbaijan. She is spending stolen money, and a court date to explain it is justified. Hopefully some stolen money can be returned.

While what you report is likely true, Wayne07, why should it be considered OK for the government to compel ANY one to explain their economic status?

There should be more than ample evidence of the criminality and fraudulent activities of these two. But, they should NOT be compelled to testify against themselves.

But, this is the UK...so all bets are off.

I’d like to see what she bought for 16 million pounds.

Yeah, I’m sympathetic to your point. But there is enough circumstantial evidence here to warrant an investigation. This isn’t grabbing a random person, they are looking at relative of a convicted embezzler and seeing extraordinary spending.

Politicians and even the Royalty of the United Kingdom should have to do the same.

When was the last time the queen or any of her queenship’s family had to explain their wealth and lavish lifestyle?

The important thing is they can do this to ANYBODY.

Don’t know her, don’t care, but the EU
and Britain in particular, has LONG been a broodery of evil ideas infecting the rest of the world.

Is this going to be a sold-out, but quarter-full, stadium tour?

They can’t do it to anybody, they have to investigate, get evidence, then present to a judge to get court order. I would never say this isn’t going to be abused in the future, but it doesn’t appear to be abused in this case.

Do you really think this would be applied to politicians? They would love to have this power, but only so they could apply it to us! Congress would make sure to exempt themselves from it.

“But, they should NOT be compelled to testify against themselves.”

Correct. If the money is stolen, it is the government’s responsibility to prove that. It is not the accused’s responsibility to prove that it isn’t.

We need to remove their exemptions. Laws should apply equally to all. No exceptions.
