When my paternal grandfather returned home from the horrors of the Pacific Campaign (Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Saipan, Okinawa etc) that’s exactly what he did to my grandmother. Proposed afterwards, and had 7 kids after they got married. I miss them both dearly.
