Editor's Note: This story was published prior to allegations Wednesday that Brett Kavanaugh attended parties involving what a third accuser refers to as "gang rape."
RALEIGH, N.C. On the eve of a hearing into allegations of sexual misconduct against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, North Carolina's senators are staking out positions on whether they'll support the nomination.
U.S. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, announced Tuesday night that his committee would schedule a vote Friday on Kavanaugh's confirmation. The announcement came two days before the committee will hear from Professor Christine Blasey Ford, a former classmate of Kavanaugh who has accused him of attempted rape at a high school party 36 years ago.
The scheduled vote raised protests from Senate Democrats, who said it proves the Republican leadership isn't taking the allegations seriously. Grassley later clarified that the committee vote was scheduled as a matter of procedure and that the panel wouldn't vote unless it's ready to do so.
Republican U.S. Sen.Thom Tillis of North Carolina sits on the Judiciary Committee, and spokesman Daniel Keylin said Tillis will keep an open mind.
"The Judiciary Committee is fully investigating these serious allegations. Senator Tillis looks forward to hearing directly from Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh on Thursday and participating in a fair, respectful and evidence-based process for all sides," Keylin said in a statement.

But we need to commend Senator Burr and encourage Sen. Tillis to vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh - and why.
Phone numbers: Sen. Burr - (202) 224-3154 - THANK HIM! Sen. Tillis - (202) 224-6342 - Persuade him respectfully
They are both our RINO’S.
I know. But we need their votes on this issue or others who are not RINO’s will be defeated in November.
Tillis sits on the Committee who will hopefully vote on Friday on the nomination.
I called his office and got voicemail.
But he needs to hear from the right because I am SURE he has heard from the Demonrats.
Burr already donated his nuts to Mark Warner. Yeah, these guys really are all about respect.
They can spend some time thinking about what Trump could do to disaster relief funds they requested. If they piss him off he will send them a few hundred bucks and a note that says better luck next time
Exactly right.
I see anyone using the phrase “keep an open mind” as using PC speak to say, “this woman’s batsh** crazy and I’m voting to confirm.
Hopefully you are right. I suppose Tillis has to appear “open minded” but Senator Burr has taken the RIGHT approach and so has Sen. Graham.
If Tillis needs to be convinced make him a one term senator.
Oh My!!!
Yep - that’s a good message to send when calling his office. But, again, we need his vote. He needs to wise up.
Both Burr and Tillis are Bush League Republicans who need to be replaced ASAP.
Burr has said he is not going to run again.
Tillis was just elected in 2014....so he will be running again in 2020 when President Trump is running. He needs to grow a backbone if he is to be re-elected.
Tillis is a crapweasel.
I've always told everyone. "I'm always willing to listen"
And open mind is just a nice way of saying "Keep spewing your BS, it's not really going to make a difference"
Yes, but we need his vote!!!!! Calls are required.
Already called today just sayin Im not fond of him. Burrito either.
For people who don’t live in North Carolina and haven’t memorized the names of all of the senators in the U.S. Senate, Richard Burr is a United States Senator.
And he’s a Republican. Wow. I’m so shocked that he’ll vote to confirm.
If I am a senator, my strategy is “Keep your mouth shut and don’t give the crazies a chance at you”
GREAT that you called. I understand.
