Teacher Fired-Refused 50% Credit to Students Who Didn't Do Homework-Leaves Goodbye on Whiteboard

A Florida history teacher says she was fired for refusing to give half-credit to students who didn't turn in their assignments - and now her farewell message to her class is going viral. Diane Tirado says West Gate K-8 School in Port St Lucie had a 'no zero' policy, requiring teachers to give students no less than a 50-per cent grade on assignments. Tirado, 52, tells television station WPTV that she was fired on September 14 when she refused to follow the policy after several students didn't turn in a homework project she had assigned two weeks earlier.

Before leaving, Tirado left a handwritten message on a whiteboard for her students that read: 'Bye kids. Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes young the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in. [Love] Mrs Tirado.'

'I’m so upset because we have a nation of kids that are expecting to get paid and live their life just for showing up and it’s not real,' Tirado said.

'The reason I took on this fight was because it was ridiculous,' she wrote. 'Teaching should not be this hard. Teachers teach content, children do the assignments to the best of their ability and teachers grade that work based on a grading scale that has been around a very long time.

She continued: 'reachers also provide numerous attempts to get the work collected so they can give a child a grade. By nature, most teachers are loving souls who want to see students succeed.

'We do above and beyond actual teaching to give them the support they need. Are we perfect? NO. We make mistakes like all other human beings, but I know teachers work their butts off to help children to be the best people they can be!!!'

No specific cause was given in her termination letter from the principal at West Gate school, since Tirado was still on probation.

The married mother-of-one has worked in education for many years but was hired to teach eighth-grade history at West Gate only on July 30.

The principal deferred comment to the school district.

A spokeswoman for St. Lucie Public Schools says there is no district policy prohibiting teachers from giving a grade of zero.

The West Gate student and parent handbook contains a grading rubric that includes the line, written in red all-caps: 'NO ZERO'S-LOWEST POSSIBLE GRADE IS 50%'

In 1979 my family moved from Massachusetts to Florida. I was in 9th grade and taking 2nd year French, Algebra 1, and other advanced classes. In Florida those course were not available in middle school which was 7-9 due to overcrowding, so they immediately skipped me up a grade to 10th. Even there the kids were clearly....most of them....slower between the ears even back then.

We are not interested in our children’s future. We just want them to look good on paper

It's so refreshing to see one of today's teachers stand up to this nonsense. I get it that the recession caused a situation where teachers (and everyone else) were so in fear of losing their jobs that they sold out on professional standards.

With Common Core and mandated federal and state testing, I can't imagine how teachers will ever get to create an environment based on individual accountability for students again. How does one teach if there's always someone questioning their actions every minute and taking everything they do out of context?

Larry Elder had the reverse situation when he got to a better school. He had to rise to the challege. He cites (someone’s quote about) the racism of low expectations

I appreciate her standards - rare in today’s world.

That said...

Her note indicates a lack of basic grammar...but typical of today’s teachers/indoctrinators.

When I was in school, my best teachers (and the one’s who had the most influence on me) were the hardest ones, the one’s who graded hard and demanded work be completed. Easy teachers are all but forgotten. I may not have understood that at the time, but that is why we have adults running things. (except in Florida).

Oh I live here. It’s a mess.

What gets me the most, is the school board denies the 50% rule but it’s clearly stated in the rulebook! What a bunch of liars

Obama Obama Obama! (Pledge taken every morning by the SLC school board/teachers/janitors)

Clarence Thomas describes the same situation when he got to Yale Law School.

John Bolton was a classmate of his. In his autobiography, he describes an incident where he lost his wallet on campus and someone found it and turned it in to the campus police. He found out later it was John Bolton. LOL.

The West Gate student and parent handbook contains a grading rubric that includes the line, written in red all-caps: 'NO ZERO'S-LOWEST POSSIBLE GRADE IS 50%' .

If a teacher gives out 4 homework assignments in the grading period the student only needs to hand in one to get a passing grade on homework.

The same would be true for test. The teacher gives four test in the grading period the student need only sign his name on 3 and get a 100% on the fourth to get a passing grade.

My stepson is the type that did exactly that. He was a bright student that did just enough to get by.

The situation has not changed at all. We moved to FL in 2012 from northern VA. The math in FL was at least 2 years behind at the elementary school level. I homeschooled my kids so it didn’t really have any effect on me, but I was surprised it was that bad.
