A green card is no longer an immigrants insurance policy against deportation in the Donald Trump era.
Documented immigrants can now be deported from the United States if they break the rules of federal and state programs that offer public benefits to immigrants.
New guidelines implemented last week by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services say that immigrants who abuse any program related to the reception of public benefits will be summoned to appear before an immigration court.
Immigrants will be subjected to removal procedures if theres evidence of fraud or willful misrepresentation in connection with any official matter or application before another governmental agency, said the guidelines, published late last month.
In those cases, immigration officials will have expanded authority to issue Notices to Appear (NTA), documents that mark the start of deportation procedures.
The main public benefits that immigrants with legal residence permits, known as Green Cards, can receive are: Medicaid for people with low income or disabilities; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families; Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; Supplemental Security Income; and the Childrens Health Insurance Program.
Receiving assistance from those programs could even harm an immigrants application for a Green Card under a proposal by the Homeland Security Department designed to block documented immigrants from obtaining residence if they or their children receive public benefits, including food stamps and early childhood education programs.
An aliens receipt of public benefits comes at taxpayer expense and availability of public benefits may provide an incentive for aliens to immigrate to the United States, the DHS draft argued.
The revised USCIS guidance for the issuance of NTAs, which the agency says was designed to enforce President Donald Trumps priorities of immigration policies, will increase and speed up deportation procedures, according to immigration experts.
U.S. authorities are also targeting permanent residents who apply for citizenship.
The USCIS policy memorandum indicated that its employees will have more leeway to start deportation procedures to immigrants whose citizenship applications are denied on good moral character grounds.
They include applicants convicted of aggravated felonies prior to November 29, 1990, or applicants convicted of deportable offenses after obtaining lawful permanent resident (LPR) status, it added.

Once again, get rid of Birthright Citizenship ... no more benefits to their kids who are the anchors that get the benefit ... and VOILA, a very substantial piece of the immigration puzzle is solved.
Yes, but do we accomplish this? Supreme Court clarifying the 14th amendment? Or legislation? Pretty daunting.
So they will now get the “red” card....
More lies.
Green card holders have always been subject to deportation.
Sweeping generalizations, hyperbole and inaccuracies. They’re trying to get a rise out of moderate Republicans and keep borderline Democrats from walking away.

This one is more accurate, if you’re interested in posting it.

A green card never was a guarantee against deportation...
Merely a document from our govt testifying to permission for a foreign national to reside in the US and work, and that the person had signed certain agreements to immigrate beforehand...
amongst those that he/she had agreed and sworn and understood that they would be deported for felonies or for lying on their immigration application and could be for misdemeanors....
NO DAH. Boy our government is quick on the draw and to even allow these benefits to green card holders who are here a temp workers is an outrage.
These are IMMIGRANTS not illegal aliens...
Temp workers don’t get green cards...
Only IMMIGRANTS get green cards...
The question here, of course, is why are non citizens being “offered benefits? Did we allow or bring them in because we have a surplus of money and no good way to use it?
Green cards are given to migrant workers as well.
It’s a start, at least.
Even small steps in the right direction are steps in the right direction...it’s how the Dems ruined the Nation...one inch at a time - and if that’s how we need to take it back, then we need to stop being so short-attentive and lazy.
And could also be deported for taking government aid — or at least it used to be that way.
