US to slash refugee admissions to historic low of 30,000, Pompeo confirms

Victory for White House hardliners as secretary of state says US will cut number of refugees by 15,000 next year

The US will allow no more than 30,000 refugees into the country in the coming year, down by a third from last year’s cap, the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has announced.

The latest cut reflects a victory by White House hardliners on immigration over both the state department and the Pentagon. When Donald Trump took office the ceiling on refugees the US was prepared to welcome each year was 110,000. Trump lowered that to 45,000, and significantly fewer were actually allowed in.

The new ceiling marks a historic low since the US Refugee Act was introduced nearly 40 years ago.

In announcing the cut, Pompeo said that the US would also process the applications of over 280,000 new asylum seekers, adding that over 800,000 asylum seekers were already in the US awaiting judgment on their claims.

He claimed: “These expansive figures continue the United States’ longstanding record as the most generous nation in the world when it comes to protection-based immigration.”

“Some will characterise the refugee ceiling as the sole barometer of America’s commitment to vulnerable people around the world. This would be wrong,” Pompeo said.

In recent decades, the US has been the main destination for the world’s refugees, admitting three out of four million worldwide since the passing of the 1980 Refugee Act. However, the number of refugees admitted each year has dropped dramatically from the more than 200,000 in 1980.

Only a very small percentage of whom are Christians. We should take them ONLY.

One of Jimmy Carter's parting gifts, an amendment to the incalculably destructive 1965 Immigration Act.

There are a LOT of things I won’t forgive Carter for, but this is probably #1.

One of those ‘boat people’ from Cuba he allowed in? Murdered a co-worker of mine. Slashed her up with a machete in front of her young daughter.

I don’t understand how ANYONE, Left OR Right can’t see that taking in anyone and everyone is not good for Americans.

I’m sure if we did the research, we could cite an example for every day from 1965 until today!

Deduct the first 30,000 successful claims from the refugee quota. Deport the other 1,050,000.

No one even knows this. And that is very sad.

Thank you, George W. and your “Faith Based Initiative”.

Buying off churches to throw-in with Leftists makes him worse than a Democrat IMHO.

Yes, we should. And South African farmers, but the Democrats already judge shopped, and stripped the POTUS of his authority to bring in who he likes.

So what choice does he have but to say screw it and just lower the number being let in?

True. The only other choice is to not just lower the number admitted, but to eliminate it. ZERO refugees.

Yes. The POTUS should be allowed to unilaterally do anything he wants on refugees, but the courts think they run the country.
