Voters elected political newcomer Pete Flores to the Texas Senate on Tuesday, flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years and further bolstering Republicans supermajority in the chamber ahead of the November elections.
A retired game warden, Flores defeated former state and U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego for the Senate District 19 seat after receiving backing from some of the states most prominent politicians, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and U.S. Sens John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.
We conservatives are conservative in the way we make approaches. The gun fights not over until the last shots fired, Flores told the Express-News after Gallego conceded in a phone call just before 9 p.m. The last shots been fired.
Flores win marked an incredible upset in a district that political observers said shouldnt have been competitive for Republicans. Low turnout in special elections and high-level GOP interests in preserving a Senate supermajority helped push Flores across the line, they said.
It will provide a completely unexpected gift for Republicans for the next legislative session, said Mark Jones, a professor of political science at Rice University.

Means nothing! BLUE WAVE COMING! Hillary wins!
May this portend the outcome of the up coming midterm elections!
Praise God! Thank you for this great news. I can now go to sleep happy too! Very sweet indeed.
Cruz +9 in latest Quinnipiac poll.
Wouldnt the be the blue wave leaving?
State contest, but this one came in a long way “under the radar” of conventional wisdom.
So happy to GalleGO!!
Is that Hillary circling...
Excellent news. This corresponds with the poll out today with Ted Cruz taking a big lead over his opponent.
True and may all other contests repeat this win; sate and federal!
“Cruz +9 in latest Quinnipiac poll.”
The tide is turning. They can forget about their blue wave.
The Christine Ford fiasco will be another nail in their coffin.
It appears Texas is still Texas. I would be interested in knowing what Flores main campaign themes were. Other Republicans should consider copying them. Did he run as squishy moderate or a real conservative?
The last Republican to hold the seat was Andrew Phelps McCormick. According to the Legislative Library of Texas, he left office in 1879.
>This will lead the morning shows....not.
Blue bubble bursting!
