There is a huge Border Patrol presence at Sonoita, twenty miles northeast from Nogales and an equal distance from the border. Scores of vehicles can be seen parked there every day. For years locals have urged that the useless station be moved to the west. To a location where intense vehicle patrol could be utilized along the border and the length of Ruby Road to the west of Nogales as far as the border crossing at Why,AZ. This would stop the use of the Chilton Ranch as a passageway.

My thoughts exactly. It has a wild, mysterious and if you let it, scary flavor or feeling to it.
The history of that area is pretty neat. I love the southwest.

The owner may or may not be involved but in most cases is not in any way involved. Landowners on the border cannot enforce illegal immigration laws. Ranchers have been jailed and sued for trying to keep illegals from trespassing over the years.
Ranchers and other land owners are not allowed to do anything about illegals crossing their land. They have been jailed and sued for even trying to enforce trespassing laws against them.
Fact, if a citizen trespasses on private property that is properly posted here in NM the State Police or sheriff’s deputy will come arrest that person and they will be charged with trespassing and pay a fine- $300 years ago I don’t know how much now. If an illegal or anyone that looks like they might be an illegal is trespassing on private property local law enforcement will tell you to call Border Patrol, illegals will not be charged with trespassing and will not be fined.
So what exactly do you think ranchers should be doing about it?
Before you even get started down that road you better put all your assets in someone else’s name or you will be signing them over to an illegal at the end of a lawsuit against you.
Illegals have been legally found to have the same constitutional rights as citizens, armed or not. I don’t agree with that but it is what the courts have ruled. Anyone messing with illegals in any way will find out they actually have far more rights than citizens do.

And honestly, I know that he doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance against that kind of armed.
If he had turned a blind eye and not alerted authorities, then I would say he was culpable. But he didn’t. He did what he could.
