The Japanese hoped to catch America’s carriers in port, and knock us out of a potential war.

Ixnay, even if they had we would have rebuilt the fleet, prosecuted the war, and utterly defeated Japan. Such was that generation.

It helped us to prosecute the war faster because they didn’t get the carriers, but in the end the result would have been the same. Our production abilities were amazing - and this is just carriers:

“In all, 143 aircraft carriers including conversions and the training carriers were completed prior to the end of WW2. Of these, 38 escort carriers were transferred to the RN.”
