FEMA staging ambulances, medical helicopters at Spartanburg airport ahead of Florence

FEMA said ambulances, medical helicopters, and other emergency response vehicles from across the country are being staged at the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport ahead of Hurricane Florence.

More than 200 ambulances and 11 medical helicopters and the crews that man them are setting up on the airport’s runway, waiting to respond when Florence begins to take its toll on South Carolina.

The emergency responders will be dispatched from the Spartanburg airport when needed.

This is the way that Bush’s marginalized FEMA should have been running in 2005.

Spartanburg is automaker BMW’s recent US manufacturing plant. Wonder if they’ll figure in?

How so?

Spartanburg is a couple hundred miles from the coast and the BMW plant remains open, but some BMW parts suppliers are certain to be shut down. Mercedes and Volvo are near Charleston on the coast and are closed.

Might have some large lots that might be useful for staging. Other than that, I can’t think of how.

"Spartanburg is automaker BMW’s recent US manufacturing plant. Wonder if they’ll figure in?"

BMW is a relatively good corporate citizen but they operate behind the scenes. They tend to focus on quality of life issues like the arts and hospitals.

Of interest, my daughter and son in law are first responders. They tried to arrange for food and shelter for those staging but were rebuffed by Men In Black. The crews are sleeping in their aircraft and trucks.

The Governor's of both North and South Carolina did ask for and did receive federal emergency declarations so I do not think FEMA is overstepping their bounds.

One odd thing though, local emergency management folks claimed not to have known about this "staging" in advance and act miffed about it. Maybe the locals egos are bruised by not being included or maybe they were asked to keep quiet so as not to create more public angst.

NC, SC, VA, and GA have all requested and received designations as disaster areas as of a few days ago. Unlike some governing bodies, like Puerto Rico, these folks are out in front.

thanks.
It would seem the state should have notified the locals ?
I just read an article here:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/09/14/trump-makes-surprise-phone-call-to-north-carolina-mayor-as-hurricane-florence-approaches.amp.html

Where:
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said he asked the president for an enhanced disaster declaration to expedite more resources as the storm began to bear down on the coast.

Florence. The short form of that is Flo. Flo is the spokesperson for Progressive Insurance. Therefore, progressives are complicit in the hurricane.
