Trump disputes Puerto Rico hurricane death toll

US President Donald Trump is disputing official findings that nearly 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico as a result of last year's storms.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico," Mr Trump wrote on Twitter, without offering evidence for the claim.

He accused Democrats of inflating the official death toll to "make me look as bad as possible".

The official figure was released last month after an independent study.

On Thursday, Mr Trump tweeted that Democrats were attacking him "when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico".

The Republican president suggested the hurricane death toll was artificially boosted by adding those who had passed away from natural causes such as old age.

"Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!" he tweeted.

Mr Trump's tweets came as Hurricane Florence - a category two storm projected to bring catastrophic flooding - bore down on the US East Coast.

Where does the official death toll come from?

A George Washington University study in July found that 2,975 people died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria, which struck the island territory in September 2017.

The governor of Puerto Rico, who commissioned that research, said he accepted the estimate as official.

The study concluded the initial death toll of 64 only included those killed directly by hurricanes Maria and Irma - either by drowning, flying debris or building collapse.

George Washington University also counted those who died in the six months following the storm as a result of poor healthcare provision and a lack of electricity and clean water.

Repeated power cuts also led to an increased number of deaths from diabetes and sepsis.

Last May, Harvard University public health researchers published a study that estimated the death toll was even

Why did they come out with this, right as Hurricane Florence is hitting?

The media have tried for a year to make Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico into Trump’s Katrina.

“The study concluded the initial death toll of 64 only included those killed directly by hurricanes Maria and Irma - either by drowning, flying debris or building collapse.”

Then only 64 died from the hurricane.

Idiots!

Cut Puerto Rico loose. Let them be their own damn country.

Why are they are a fricking territory anyway? Did McKinley lose a bet?

The original count of deaths from the hurricane included only those who actually died from the hurricane. CAN’T HAVE THAT!!!

“George Washington University also counted those who died in the six months following the storm as a result of poor healthcare provision and a lack of electricity and clean water.”

These numbers may be true.

BUT a study like this has likely NEVER been done before in past hurricane aftermaths.

Likely it was done ONLY to make Trump look bad.

Grant Puerto Rico the independent nation status it has long sought.

Once it is a sovereign state, Puerto Rico will never again have to endure this kind of trauma.

Like Katrina, Puerto Rican hurricane relief was a product of local government failures.

“With no evidence” was he supposed to Twitter images of the 64 bodies - NYT said it was 64. And if it was 3 million Trump did a great job on relief. This is such bs. The liberal papers said it was 18 to 64 people. What the hell evidence does Trump need?

The media also failed to report food and other relief supplies rotting in containers and warehouses because bumbling and corrupt Puerto Rican officials didn’t get them distributed. The Puerto Rican electrical system was also in shambles before the hurricane again due to corrupt and inept local government officials. Remember the mayor of San Juan lambasting Trump for not bringing enough aid while she was standing in front of pallets of supplies that were sitting in a warehouse?

"George Washington University also counted those who died in the six months following the storm as a result of poor healthcare provision and a lack of electricity and clean water."

Massive stockpile of bottled water found in Puerto Rico a year after Maria

"FEMA acknowledged to CBS News on Wednesday that the bottles were brought inland in 2017 in the wake of the hurricane and that they were turned over to “central government.”

The 3,000 approximation comes from a George Washington University study that tried to total how many "excess deaths" occurred because of Hurricane Maria and would not have happened in the absence of the cyclone.

Those involved with the study have emphasized that the 3,00 estimate(!) is not a conclusive number and further work should be done.

Even the GWU group admits the numbers are estimates and are not conclusive.

Stop posting this stuff here — enough is enough. We know what happened by now. Our side has more than adequately weighed in.

Until Puerto Rico and Trump, death tolls were from immediate impacts of storms, not models and deaths from incompetence weeks later.

I hate the left and their media fake news, propaganda arm. They are destroyers of the ability to compare apples to apples and common sense.

I believe the scientific way of this would be:

If you change the method of calculation...

You must change the past event to fit the new criteria, or post both.

I guess they really don’t understand the difference between apples and oranges after all.
