Make It Right chose TimberSIL because it advertised sustainable wood that was not treated with chemicals, but the lumber rotted in the Louisiana climate, according to the suit.

OMG, that is just too damned funny. Who'da thunk untreated wood was a bad idea in New Orleans? Environazis are some of the most stupid people on the planet.

I kinda like the ones further down with the upper deck. I’d love something like that.

Untreated wood is a poor choice in humid climates. Brick and concrete block are often a better choice.

If you go on houseplans.com or similar sites all they have are stick homes ... I agree completely ,, concrete is the way to go in Florida where I’m at... EFIS is great for here..

I find it curious why Mike Holmes is not mentioned here. He had a show, “Make it Right”, on TV & he built some of these homes, showcasing the builds on his show.

I remember back watching those shows & thinking a flat roof wont do in NOLA. Neither will untreated wood, which will not only rot but is a termite feast. NOLA has a serious termite problem.

Holmes is a Canadian. Perhaps they don’t know how to build in a high rain/humidity locale. Then again, perhaps he built the houses well, but with shoddy materials & a poor design, though he should have spotted these flaws.

Whoever designed these homes has never spent a minute in NOLA or anywhere along the Gulf coast. Flat roofs only work in low precipitation areas. Duh.

Remember that corrupt New Orleans pol with cold hard cash stashed in the freezer?

Hiding cash in the freezer inside a food box is a not uncommon way black people try to burglarproof their cash stash. Why blacks do this is a little complicated but it goes back to when cash was very scarce in the South and people tried all sorts of ways to protect what they had by hiding it. In cities most banks wanted no part of black depositors with their tiny weekly deposits, even the few black owned banks were snobbish about lower class depositors. NOLA houses are traditionally wood and generally easy to break in. So cash hidden in empty cans in the back of the pantry or in the freezer is common as burglars don't like to stick around.

“””But Brad feels good about himself, and that’s what really matters, right?”””

Yup. Typical leftist who ‘tried’.

This mess also reflects another attribute about leftists.

Leftists do not know squat about any subject.

Building houses in hot, humid, and rainy climates like most of the Southern US is no big deal except when a leftist gets involved and thinks that a design that looks good in Chicago will be great in New Orleans.

This was a charity project. Donations would make up the difference.

This is a case of the post-modern Wizards of Smart meet reality. All those hip and with-it architects from Ghana and Chile had never set foot in Louisiana. Brad ought to have noted what hoses that working class people looked like in the city. The city has thousands of wood houses that are 70-100 years old that continue to function well. Instead of using designs that have stood the test of time, long straight walls and hipped roofs for example, the do-gooding smart alecs ran up buildings with flat roofs and poor natural drainage. Of course they got taken by sloppy substandard work and crooked contractors. That happened a lot after the storm. I doubt if they put any vetting system in place and were anxious for the SJW aspects to hire in an ‘ethnically sensitive’ manner and got some real dindus working so to speak on their super cool SJW houses. Now the unforgiving climate of south Louisiana again teaches the lessons of the copybook headings.

Here in Seattle lots of new homes have the fancy roof designs. While it isn’t humid and doesn’t rain as much as New Orleans - things do tend to stay damp from November to June. Also I imagine there is a lot of emphasis on “green” materials. It will be interesting to hear how they hold up.

A gal I know lives in what she called her “Ikea” apartment.

“Oh - you have all Ikea furniture?”

“No - the entire apartment is like it was bought at Ikea!”

It is new, looks great and is very modern. But after being in there for a year things are already starting to fall apart.

Cedar was the wood of choice in Louisiana.

Now days, pressure treated pine is the most cost-effective alternative; redwood for a high-end option.

Chicago? These houses look like they belong in sunny California.

EFIS is great for here..

I have it on my house in Texas. No problems but it did have some until pretty recently.

Even if they sold the units for below cost, if they sold a defective product, they should be held accountable. Just like any for-profit business would be.

Hollywood thinks they are qualified to tell everyone how to run the country but they aren't even competent to figure out how to build a proper house in the American South.

It is like every other minority housing project. The residents knock out all of the windows, steal the copper or anything else of value and then blame it on anybody and everybody

Cement block is the universal choice where it is humid and rains a lot.

Make It Right is the motto Canadian Contractor Mike Holmes uses. Is his Company attached to this Project?

Not really. He tossed some money at some people without thinking it through and being careful to see how it was spent. It’s typical liberal behavior. See a problem? Toss some money at it.
