Trump-backed Eddie Edwards wins N.H. GOP primary; would be state's first black congressman

A candidate endorsed by the Trump administration has won the Republican nomination for a U.S. House seat in New Hampshire, and he’d be the state’s first black congressman if elected in November.

Eddie Edwards, of Dover, won a six-way race in Tuesday’s GOP primary for the 1st Congressional District.

Edwards is a Navy veteran who also served as a police chief and as chief enforcement officer for the state liquor commission.

What his campaign video. It’s a bunch of mush and nothing about illegal immigration.

The entire focus of this nonprofit is leftist. No, real conservatives don’t serve on such stuff.

He’s a fake conservative if ever there was one.

Correct. Lefty Rudy endorsed him, not Trump.

On the RAT side, Maura Sullivan, a carpetbagger from Illinois and a USMC “combat veteran” had all the money and ads and was backed by RAT central, but lost to Chris Pappas, a local boy.

Remember, NH is 94% white, (and CD 1, where I live, is even more so), so elections are still about ideas among whites. Edwards won’t have as much of an advantage as the “first black whatever” would have in a state with POC voters in significant numbers.

Obviously I will vote for him.

Excellent news all around - I assume it means he beat the other 5 candidates with 50%+1 vote or more? Good to see the party rally and clearly the endorsement helped. Lots of anecdotal evidence that there is no “blue wave” except in the heads of the “98% chance Hillary wins” pollsters. Does he have a chance to beat the Democrat? I noticed it was a seat given up by the Dem incumbent making it an open seat.

Here are Eddie Edwards’s positions on the issues:

https://www.lfda.org/candidate/eddie-edwards

He describes himself as pro-life and opposed to late-term abortion, and vowed to oppose funding for Planned Parenthod. He akso supports building the Wall and opposes providing a pathway to citizenship to illegal aliens, including those who arrived as children.

I guess that it is possible that he is lying, and it is true that he has never served as a legislator, so he lacks a voting record on these or any other issues. Anything’s possible. But Edwards is a Navy veteran, former police chief and, more recently, Chief of New Hampshire State Division of Liquor Enforcement, and the fact that he sat on the board of a nonprofit that provided grants to Planned Parenthood and supported resettling African refugees in New Hampshire *over his objections* gives me no pause. People serve in all kinds of boards and it is silly to ascribe all actions from nonprofits to each of their board members.

There’s no need to rehash the arguments for and against the candidates in the GOP primary, but I just will say that the main reason why I supported Edwards was that his main rival was a Rand Paul acolyte, and I trust the word of a law-enforcement officer with a conservative platform more than that of a Paulistinian. Moreover, I thought that Edwards was more electable in the general than was Sanborn, and that having another black conservative in Congress would help the GOP to increase support among blacks nationally and make it harder for the media to depict the party as lily-white.

In any event, the primary is over, and Edwards is the GOP nominee in a district that Trump carried by just 48.2% to 46.6% over Hillary and that Obama carried by just 50.2% to 48.6% over Romney. The next congressman from NH-01 will be either (i) Edwards or (ii) a gay, liberal Democrat who will vote against everything for which conservatives stand. It really should go without saying that conservatives should support Edwards in the general election.

Really? Were you born yesterday? He was on the board for years, up to just a few years ago, for an organization that is all about protecting illegal aliens, “refugees”, etc., and government-provided healthcare, including advocacy thereof, funding Planned Parenthood, advocating to proactively make NH more “diverse”, etc.

There is nothing the least conservative about that organization, it is all about expanding government healthcare and increasing support for illegals. That’s what it does. Claiming to have voted against a grant here or there so he can run as a Republican is nothing. As is, in the current era, him having been in the military before becoming a bureaucrat and running for office on the GOP side in a purple state.

Oh, and a Ron Paul dude in NH actually believes in what he campaigns on.

But too late now, Edwards is obviously the guy we’ve got to support. But he’s a budding McCain/Ayotte if ever there was one. Just like all the GOPe candidates who slipped into office as supposedly tea party members back in the day.

Congress could certainly use some law enforcement action.

It’s a done deal. Republicans in New Hampshire need to be the greatest admirers and friends of Edwards from now on.

Look at the situation in Maine with Collins. As feminist and far to the left as she is, she implied that she would vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

Many Democrats are already sent vulgar and even threatening messages to her. This is exactly the time that Republicans and all who love freedom in Maine should be like the supportive, admiring suitors of her dreams of youth, whispering sweet nothings in her ears and thanking her as sweetly as possible for voting to confirm Kavanaugh.

...wise political, psychological strategy in politics. Carpe Diem.

Many Democrats have already sent vulgar and even threatening messages to her [Collins]. Little correction there.

Anyway, don’t let a political situation of opportunity go by without action to take advantage of it. If a candidate turns out to be the wrong kind, then let slip the dogs of protest votes, ruses and demonstrations.

Oh, and elsewhere the guy couldn’t even support the wall without adding in the old GOPe ruse of nonphysical means where viable, etc.

Here’s his amnesty statement from the link you just posted:

“I do not support a path to citizenship, but illegal immigrants who have come here and have jobs should have the opportunity to earn legal status by paying back taxes and a fine.”

But agreed—he is our candidate now — and hopefully soon congress critter.

Two years ago, a black man, James Lawrence, ran for the GOP second Congressional district in NH and lost to Anne Kuster. We have to get her out of there. Steven Negron just won the primary for the second district.
