I too know someone who died on the 12th day of a 30 day DUI incarceration. He told them he was withdrawing but they didn’t care. The jail guards and their supervisors might as well have put a bullet in his head by not giving him the drugs he needed to deal with his alcohol withdrawal. None of us who knew him had any idea he drank a fifth of vodka a day on top of the beers we saw him drink.

All drunks and DUI offenders should have to go through an intake process to identify those who are at risk of dying without treatment. It’s only common sense really. If they lie about their usage during this intake process and it’s on video then the jail is covered.

#6: “She asked to go to the hospital and that’s where they should’ve taken her.”
Yes, just as basic Christianity or Judaism instructs us. The woman didn’t deserve a death sentence.

The harsh reality is who was going to pay for it. I suppose they could have released her and put her on her merry way, but then when she ran into someone and killed them, who’s fault would it have been?

Where were her family and friends while she was in jail, were they there to check on her? Most likely friends and family were sick of her drug behavior and glad she was there, using the jail as detox having already spent a fortune on detox that didn’t work.

But it has to be someone’s fault. musical chairs...…………..

Written by Larry Niven. Story line is the guy escapes long enough to destroy a body parts storage facility. Making his death worth the cost. Great read.

Her family was likely tired of dealing with her. Drug addicts often steal to support their habit and family members are often the first victims.

She asked to go to the hospital and that’s where they should’ve taken her

.. winner winner . dumbest, most short sighted comment I have read today.. Every inmate asks to go to the hospital. and every inmate claims innocence or the demands their rights. Its jail, not a cruise ship. The cops Don't even have to give you a phone call until they are good and ready..

No. Death for being a junkie not for parking tickets. The cops didn’t force her to be a junkie. Junkies are about the most worthless people in society. Although they have a lot of intense competition for that title. She chose the lifestyle. She chose poorly.

Addiction is sad to those of us who know. I attended a support group of Families Against Narcotics recently and heard from others.

When you think you have a sad story and you go listen there you realize how widespread and horrible the opioid situation really is.

A person whether a drug addict or person with diabetes or whatever has a right to adequate medical care under the Constitution. The cops refused and basically left the girl to die. The cops chose poorly.

Maybe. Lots of folks ask to go to hospital. If she didn’t tell them she was detoxing they wouldn’t know

The PD is going to pay millions for this.
If you are in jail you are their responsibility - period. If you have ever watched what a heroin addict goes thru during withdrawal your skin would crawl.

And for all you morally superior Freeper’s on this thread who think she deserved what she got - would you just stand by and watch - let her die a slow and agonizing death? If so then F-you!

What rights do I have when I am in jail or prison?

You have rights to adequate medical care and equal treatment guaranteed by the Constitution and federal law. The Eighth Amendment to the Constitution—prohibiting “cruel and unusual punishment”—gives convicted inmates the right to adequate medical care. The Due Process Clause to the U.S. Constitution (Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments) gives this same right to pretrial detainees.

Then get out your check book and pay for it. Put your money where your mouth is. Start a non profit to solve the problem.

The reality is just like we can’t provide 100 percent heath care for everyone. The reality is that there are not unlimited funds to do this. The reality is the scammers have used up all the funds for the people who need it. The reality is this problem was dumped into the legal system which is not designed to handle this.

THE REALITY IS WHERE WERE THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

So get off you ass and go do something about it instead of whining.

KRNV

According to the lawsuit, the Nevada Department of Public Safety is investigating the case and found multiple violations, including “inhumanity to prisoners,” which is a potential felony crime.

Sheriffs office edited the video surveillance of the cell camera, which documented all interaction between staff and prisoner. This edited video was submitted to incident investigators. With the filing of a federal lawsuit, the missing video came to light.

Head of jail facility Sgt. Holland who claimed she was feigning symptoms has taken early retirement. Deputy Gulcynski had taken upon himself medical evaluation of prisoner, and subsequent denial of medical service from a facility across the street. He was the last person in contact with prisoner prior to her death from a massive seizure.

The missing video reveals timeline of the discovery of an unresponsive prisoner. No medical response was initiated at that time. The cell was locked again until a forensics specialist arrived more than five hours later.

I can see why they didn’t initially take her to the hospital. As you’ve said, many inmates probably claim to need hospital care when they really don’t. But by the second day of her vomiting and convulsing, I have to say, they should have been able to see that she was in dire straits.
