A gallon of gasoline holds the equivalent of 36.6 kwh of energy. A gallon of diesel holds the equivalent of 41.1 kwh of energy. A typical Tesla 40 kwh battery stores approximately 36 kwh of “usable” energy in 6800 “18500” lithium ion cells and can be purchased new from Tesla for approximately $40,000 if you bought one of their cars. So a Tesla battery is basically a $40,000 one gallon gas can.

I’ve always been taught that gasoline was one one the most efficient energy storage medians. Your numbers, which I have not seen before but have no reason to doubt, really quantify that efficiency well. And they show how absurd the current state of electric car mania is.
