The main organization for Catholic owners of multi-million dollar businesses announced it placed its annual Vatican tithe in escrow following recent scandals.
Legatus, a lay organization of Catholic business owners founded by Dominos Pizza founder Thomas Monaghan, revealed the decision Thursday, saying that while the organization remains devoted to the church, they require further clarification on the Vaticans measures of financial accountability and how exactly their charitable contributions are used.
The decision follows inquiries from Legatus members to the organizations Board of Governors concerning Pennsylvanias grand jury report on sexual abuse, allegations against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, and Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganos accusations against Pope Francis and 32 other high-ranking church officials.

Two things:
!. Tithing is stuff, not money.
2. Tithing is an old covenant concept.
Christians don’t tithe. Christians give freely from their heart as others have need.
The amount Legatus is placing in escrow will total about $820,000.
So, that’s their ten percent of what they take in. Nice!
Both true and not true. Christians are to give freely from our hearts... but we also tithe. Read Matt 23:23... Christ rebukes the Pharisees for tithing to the penny but neglecting the truths of mercy and justice. He follows by saying the former they ought to have done (tithe) but they ought not have neglected the latter.
Send money to your local Catholic radio station organization, not to the diocese or archdiocese. For example, I highly recommend the Catholic radio organization that operates in the Washington, DC area, La Promesa Foundation, a lay apostolate, which does business as “Guadalupe Radio Network” (they operate stations in Texas, Alabama, Florida and New Mexico in addition to WMET AM 1160 in the DC area).
First, Legatus is not doing, and not claiming to do, a tithe as defined in the OT.
Second, Legatus is not an individual it is a corporate philanthropy. Though its individual members may very well be giving "from the heart," their policy --- sourced from their own financial prudence, and not from OT or Church law or obligation--- is that they require proper accounting for the use of their funds.
That in itself is certainly proper.
And that's all this news story is about.
Relevant Radio too!
Yer right. I realized I was going off on a pet peeve right after I hit post. But I couldn’t take it back, so here we are... :-)
S’Aright! :o)
I believe Christ said to title the first 10% of what you make, to the church so they may do with it what they see fit, not things. We are also free to continue to tithe to others who need it as well. Because the Vatican are continuing to do less than holy work you can give to your local church.
