Democrats have spent the week trying to catch Judge Brett Kavanaugh in a lie and employ old emails to cast him as a radical conservative.
But as Kavanaughs chaotic confirmation hearing winds down Friday, Republicans say they believe Democrats failed to land the kind of fatal blow that could derail the nomination.
The office of Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said in a statement that Democrats struggled to make a legitimate case against Kavanaugh after two days of questioning.
At the end of the Senate Judiciary Committees second day of questioning, Senate Democrats still havent been able to achieve a gotcha moment on Judge Brett Kavanaugh, the statement said. Instead, day two was little more than a continuation of political theatrics that failed to outshine a stellar performance by a highly-qualified nominee for the high court.
After grilling Kavanaugh for two days, senators on Friday are hearing from outside witnesses both supporting and opposing the nominee. This will mark the end of the hearing process. Among those invited by the Democrats on the committee is John Dean, the former Nixon White House counsel who turned against the administration during Watergate.
The committee, in the coming days and weeks, is expected to vote on Kavanaughs confirmation before the nomination heads to the full Senate for a final vote.
We look forward to the Judiciary Committee completing its review and advancing his nomination, said White House Spokesman Raj Shah.
Democrats were always going to have a tough time defeating Kavanaugh. But with Republicans enjoying only a 51-49 majority, a couple defections would be enough to stall his confirmation. But Republicans have held together and accused Democrats -- under pressure from their base, and some flirting with a presidential bid -- of turning the hearings into a "circus."

My personal opinion (which could be way off of course) is that if the Dem’s had conducted themselves with some decorum (ha!), and really done a skillful cross-examination of Kavanaugh, then maybe, JUST maybe they could have peeled off Colllins and Murkowski. Maybe.
But after putting on that circus, they hurt themselves more than anyone else. No one is going to want to reward that kind of behavior.
Yeah, I’m delusional, i know.
LOL. If there are going to be any defections, they will be on the "D" side. Possibilities include Manchin, Tester, Heitkamp, and McCaskill.
Maybe but definitely Kavanaugh is in! Winning!
I don’t think you’re delusional, you make a good point.
If Dem’s would have conducted themselves professionally and ethically they may have had a chance but they didn’t even come close.
They would have still had an uphill climb though, Kavanaugh is a very solid nominee.
It is important that this political circus took place. An outstanding show of how the America-hating, Trump-hating, unhinged traitorous left CONTINUES to degenerate into a psychopathic mob of useless, damaging, Marxist thugs.
Let us hope that this blatant image sticks through the upcoming elections.
Agreed...They keep shooting themselves in the foot, let’s keep supplying them ammunition.
It’s not possible for Dems to conduct themselves “professionally and ethically.” They have neither the experience nor interest in so doing.
Get off the dime
Take a committee vote
Get it to the floor
Needs to confirmed before oct 1
Note the disgusting lack of coverage concerning the Soros punks with bags of cash paying people to get in the gallery and raise hell. I dont think even FNC ran a story on it despite witnesses, pics and video.
You’re 100% on the mark.
I think they agreed to give Kavanaugh the vote in exchange for being allowed to do their little ‘dog and pony show’ for their constituents.
First committee vote scheduled Sept 13.
After week delay by Dems the vote will be Sept 20.
Full Senate vote last week in Sept, Judge Kavanaugh will be seated for opening day on SCOTUS.
Support Free Republic, Folks!
Yep, I love it.
What makes it even better is they know it too, they’re damned no matter what they do. :^)
Hope so
