The drug runners use real submarines in the Caribbean.

Re: “Is that aft section designed to reduce its signature?”
Those look like three big outboard motors to me.
That would put out a heat signature and a noise level that would be detectable from miles away.

Our Integrated Undersea Surveillance Systems (IUSS) have their capabilities. These permanently mounted sonar arrays in the deep oceans can detect the propeller noise of such drug ships. If this practice becomes more widespread, our technology will make these expensive vessels a huge waste of money.

If it’s packed with explosives and kills no one, it’s an act of war. If it’s packed with drugs and kills a thousand, it’s just a routine narcotics interdiction that slipped through the cracks.

Not actually a submarine.
A narco-submarine (also called drug sub and Bigfoot submarine) is a type of custom-made ocean-going self-propelled submersible vessel built by drug traffickers to smuggle drugs. They are especially known to be used by Colombian drug cartel members to export cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, which is often then transported overland to the United States.
Newer narco-submarines are fully submersible, designed specifically to be difficult to detect visually or by radar, sonar and infrared systems.
Cargoes carried are typically several tons of cocaine. For example, in 2015 the largest cargo of 7.7 tonnes (17,000 lb) was seized on a semi-submersible which had been tracked by aircraft.

Just shoot the tip of the bow off of it and see if they can make it to land.
