I think the purpose of the “anonymous editorial” is far worse. It’s designed to undermine Donald Trump’s credibility with the voting public to sway the midterm elections and ultimately the 2020 election too. If it creates enough public antipathy to support impeachment and removal before then so much the better.

I have observed the same pattern with every republican candidate since at least George W. Bush. Prior to the election the candidate is portrayed with a chosen set of negative characteristics. Usually stupidity, privilege, racism, and misogyny. In Trump’s case the accusations of misogyny go beyond the usual bigotry to include actual sexual assault. Every news report is slanted toward that perception in ways large and small.

An added feature with Trump is treason, which I don’t think has appeared with previous administrations. Since Trump colluded with the Russians, the reasoning goes, heroic patriots in the bureaucracy are risking their lives to undermine this nefarious man in the White House. Since he’s a Republican of course he’s incompetent, but far worse he’s a traitor. Everyone knows it, except Trump and you, the Trump supporter.

That’s the message of the “anonymous editorial.”
