I hope you were being sarcastic, because the term “American” refers to citizens of the United States of America. Citizens of all other countries in the Americas are known by the names of their countries: Brazilians, Canadians, Mexicans, Haitians, Peruvians, etc. We are called Americans because that is the name of our country. We are not “Unitians” or “Statians.” Hence, Americans.
