Otherwise nothing here makes sense. Headlights would have seen the car from far back. Hazard lights would have alerted the other driver from maybe even further.

Many people in the back pushing the vehicle. A good chance they were not seen. We do not even know if the lights were on in the stalled vehicle.

Their Bodies could have easily blocked the Tail-lights of the Vehicle they were pushing.

If so, the Car coming up from behind may have not seen the Tail-lights.
