The nation's largest grocery chain will be plastic-bag free at all of its nearly 2,800 stores by 2025.
Kroger Co., which orders about 6 billion bags each year, will begin phasing out their use immediately at one of its chains based in Seattle, a city that has been proactive on reducing plastic use.
The company, based in Cincinnati, operates 2,779 stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia, serving almost 9 million people daily through two dozen different grocery chains. Kroger is seeking customer feedback and will be working with outside groups throughout the transition. It will begin phasing out plastic bag use Thursday at its QFC stores in and around Seattle. It expects to be plastic-bag free at the chain next year. "We listen very closely to our customers and our communities, and we agree with their growing concerns," said Mike Donnelly, Kroger's chief operating officer. "That's why, starting today at QFC, we will begin the transition to more sustainable options.

Todays “courtesy clerks” don’t have the foggiest idea of how its done.
They just chunk things in a bag and sling it in a cart.

Going back to paper perhaps? Nah, that kills trees. Let ‘em burn instead.

As it should be, a corporate policy implemented without the force of a government, and moreover, a plastic bag free policy that will be adopted by other grocery chains, all without being forced to do so by a government.

Plastic bags were supposed to be the replacements for paper, because people were bitching about saving the trees.
Now how are shoppers going to pack items such as fruits, vegetables, frozen foods, milk and juice?
Not to mention oblong items that just don't fit in paper bags.
What about the people that live in high-rise apartments? I can carry about 6 plastic bags full of groceries with me back to my apt in one trip. I can't do that with paper bags, because it's too bulky or it'll rip.

They will be happy to sell you their reuseable bags for a dollar or so. And you know every time you go you’re going to forget that darn bag so you’ll end up buying at least one every time you shop.

India is 12th in the list of top 20 countries notorious for disbursing the maximum amount of plastic waste into the high seas from their respective coastlines. China ranks first, followed by countries in Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Bangladesh and South Africa.
Plastic is the most efficient storage medium for most things. Arew we going back to glass or waxed cardboard milk bottles? Aluminum and glass only for soda and water? Juice coming in big cans that require a can opener to punch a hole? Hamburger meat wrapped in butcher paper?
I’m no Tree-Hggin’ Hippie (though I DO love trees and have planted hundreds of them in my lifetime so far) but I ain’t gettin’ any younger and I’ve found a sturdy box with handles, or some sort of Costco carrier bag (look up ‘Snap Basket’) works great for me.
I shop for groceries every few weeks and I have SEVEN landings between the house and where I park my SUV. (See? I drive an SUV - NOT a Hippie, LOL!) so lugging stuff up to the house is a PITA and will continue to be until they carry me out, feet first. ;)
I’m seriously considering starting to order basics on-line for delivery. Wonder how the Enviro-Weenies will chastise me for THAT?

I totally agree. I put my things on the belt- all the cold stuff together. Soaps etc and they still manage to put a frozen box of something in the bag with the bathroom cleaner...… I worked in the grocery industry for 7 years, my boys also and I taught them how to bag groceries.
The Empire State Bldg was built in about 13-14 months. Getting rid of plastic bags takes 7 years.
They should pay you 5 cents if you bring your own bags
