THE TODD TRAP
Powerline ^ | August 19,2018 | SCOTT JOHNSON

Posted on 08/19/2018 4:05:14 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Rudy Giuliani appeared this morning on Meet the Press on behalf of President Trump. Host Chuck Todd asked why President Trump won’t just sit for a friendly interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller and tell the truth. What’s so hard about that? Truth is truth; Trump can avoid any alleged “perjury trap” by sticking to it.

But it’s not that simple. “Truth isn’t truth,” Giuliani responded.

“Mr. Mayor,” Todd countered. “the truth is the truth. This is going to be a bad meme.”

Andrew McCarthy refuted the seemingly self-evident position advocated by Todd in his NR column “Of Course There Is Such a Thing as a ‘Perjury Trap.’” McCarthy diplomatically accounted for the likes of Todd: “Because some of the people making this nonsensical claim [i.e., that there is no ‘perjury trap’ if you just tell the truth] are very smart, let’s stipulate that the heated moment we find ourselves in is driven by politics, not law or logic.” That’s Todd.

McCarthy explains:

The theme the anti-Trump camp is pushing — again, a sweet-sounding political claim that defies real-world experience — is that an honest person has nothing to fear from a prosecutor. If you simply answer the questions truthfully, there is no possibility of a false-statements charge.

But see, for charging purposes, the witness who answers the questions does not get to decide whether they have been answered truthfully. That is up to the prosecutor who asks the questions. The honest person can make his best effort to provide truthful, accurate, and complete responses; but the interrogator’s evaluation, right or wrong, determines whether those responses warrant prosecution.

The interrogator making the evaluation — that would be Robert Mueller

Giuliani is right and Todd is wrong.

I hope Trump is not goaded into agreeing to an interview over nonsense like this. NEVER talk to the police (or a special prosecutor) is good advice.

When did Schmuck Todd stop getting his show prep from Weasel Mueller?

Why would Rudy agree to go on camera with Chuck Todd? Anyone in the Trump administration needs to stay off of the Sunday Morning ambush shows.

Shall we ask Scooter Libby the dangers of bearing truth under a grand jury?

Trump has, amazingly, not fallen for hundreds of traps, tricks, enemies in disguise, stupid compromises...I’m much more confident in him now than at anytime since he announced

It could be a strategery to play rope-a-dope with Weasel Mueller.

The Post-modern Left basically invented the idea that "Your Truth isn't my Truth; there is no Truth; it's just how you choose to interpret something."

In a court of law with these people, I would not rely on "truth" because they'll hang you for it, whatever it is.

Where is the requirement that you even have to go on the talking heads on Sunday Morning?
If a conservative doesn’t appear the are all like “Killer Joe” that had ratings below QVC.

Isn’t Mueller’s whole career built on perjury traps?

There are no “friendly chats” with federal prosecutors. It’s like having a “friendly chat” with a shark.

Anyone in the Trump administration needs to stay off of the Sunday Morning ambush shows.

Sometimes you have to stop running away from a fight, and face your opponents where it will do the most good.

Except for the parts where he used his government positions and his Lockheed history to enrich himself.

FBI and DOJ use the surgery trap all the time...

You lied to us twenty times..now prove you did not lie...

90% of DOJ cases never go to court.....

They make up a dozen charges and the jury thinks the guy has to be guilty of something

Shall we ask Scooter Libby the dangers of bearing truth under a grand jury?
= = = = = = = = =

He is the one I ‘use’ for an example...

Q Are you Scooter Libby?
A Yes
(Answer should be. EVERYONE calls me ‘Scooter’ but my given name is Irve Lewis Libby but EVERYONE calls me Scooter.)

If he sticks with the yes ‘they’ can ‘demand’ proof that is his name and if it were not legally changed, he is lying...(In their ‘world’)

We used to laugh at WJClintons answers, depend what is is and No, I was never alone in the White House with Monica, there is always someone in the White House, guards, servants, there is a 24/7 comm center in the basement etc etc.

So the ‘wordsmith’ was really onto something, proving a YES or NO can and very likely will make a ‘liar’ out of you.

I still believe that PDT says he isn’t ‘afraid’ to meet with Mueller because he knows he has done nothing wrong BUT one little ‘slip of the tongue’ and one can be in a world of $hiite

"NEVER talk to the police (or a special prosecutor) is good advice."

It is very good advice.

I was involved in a minor dispute many years ago, and my wife called the next day, telling me that the local police had received a complaint and wanted to talk with me.

'Not a problem', I thought, and left work immediately to go to the station. I knew what had happened, and was prepared to tell exactly what I remembered, to the best of my ability.

So I started to tell my story and answered questions honestly, until being confronted by some details that didn't match the reality of the event. The other side was, in a word, LYING -- saying I had done something that I didn't do.

It became very confrontational, and I finally said that I wanted to consult with an attorney.

I later found out that my attitude was deemed 'uncooperative' based upon my refusal to continue to talk without a lawyer, despite the fact that I appeared almost immediately and was very open and honest from the outset.

Learned my lesson about talking to the police right then and there...
