When John Brennan first applied to join the CIA, and took his polygraph test, he was asked this standard question:

Have you ever worked with or for a group that was dedicated to overthrowing the US?

Remarking on this... during a panel discussion at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual conference, Brennan said: “I froze…. This was back in 1980, and I thought back to a previous election where I voted, and I voted for the Communist Party candidate.

Gus Hall was that candidate and he was the head of the Communist Party USA running for President. He was once awarded the Order of Lenin medal from the Soviet Union.

In that polygraph Brennan added:

I said I’m not a member of the Communist Party, so the polygrapher looked at me and said, ‘OK,’ and when I was finished with the polygraph and I left and said, ‘Well, I’m screwed.’”
