They are fine with it. Really.
My first thought was to agree with you. My Filipina wife has 5 siblings and 6 more half siblings — both families lived in quite cramped quarters. My wife claims she’d be “fine” in a minimalist smaller house than what we have — granted I don’t know if she REALLY wants to give up that much of her stuff.
However, the fertility rates certainly are changing, whatever the reasons. None of the siblings or half-siblings have over 3 kids; some have only one, even though their economic circumstances overall certainly are no worse than their parents’.
