I'll never understand why Blacks are considered "other," "foreign," or any such thing by either the Left or the Right. They're one of the very oldest of all American population groups. Their origins in America are rural, agricultural, and Southern. And their traditional religion is Fundamentalist Protestantism. Lingering racial bias is the reason, I would think. Because you're absolutely right about their being as American as apple pie. Certainly more than a son of immigrants like myself!
However, fundamentalism only got kicking around 1900. Prior to that, there were black Baptists and the AME was Methodist/Episcopal. And as many as a quarter of the Africans brought to the New World were from the already Catholic Congo and Angola. Many were forced into Protestantism but still retained some vestiges of their original Catholic customs.
