Walk away.
Good strategy to see how the midterms are going to turn out as a prelude to 2020.
Now the Chinese are back.

What now is the next step toward breaking the Chinese economy? We are at war with China right now. It is taking the form of cyberwar, but war it is. China is going after conservative online capacity with its allies the High Tech fifth column and is counting on a Democrat takeover of Congress in November.

Trump's squeezing them to right where he wants them. Evidently the factions had a sit-down, worked out some kind of a plan, since the most vulnerable among them were probably jumping up and down hollering "do something!".
I love it when a plan comes together (lights cigar).

What we don’t need to do is just level the tariffs.
The US needs to keep tariffs up until trade deficits come down and American industries are rebuilt.
I suggest that we keep the negotiations fixed on that. Let them know that we have certain goals. When the trade balances are fixed, and certain industries are restored, then we can lower the tariffs.
And if they help, and buy more of our goods, then maybe we get there sooner than later.

China is sending a trade envoy to Washington in a renewed effort to end a worsening tariff dispute that has raised worries it will chilal global economic growth. Hopefully..., but, China plans in decades while we plan from month to month, or at most, election to election! There is NO WAY that a victory lap is in order!

Most Americans have no idea of the expansionist aspect to China with its Belt and Road initiative and their new military bases in the Pacific among other things.
No one has challenged them before.
I may be totally off base, but it seems to me we are trying to prevent a large future war and to protect freedom in the Pacific and other places.

Mohamed El Erian said weeks ago that the U.S. was going to win the trade war. Mr. El Erian is no slouch in the area of finance; he is a man to be taken seriously.
But is this all it takes to bring a meaningful amount of manufacturing back to America, or will it be more than tariffs?

This is true.
If something positive comes out of this it will be fairly small, more symbolic than substantial, but it will keep them more careful for a while.
Perhaps make them modify their strategy a bit.

What is the strategy for reducing I/P theft? Very important... As much as the annual trade deficit, maybe moreso.

To me the single most important issue if we are going to do business with the Chinese.

No, of course not. It's gonna be a process. What's significant is that the Chicoms are blinking - that just does not happen very often. And they're going up against the craftiest negotiator in the Western world. I sleep very well at night knowing that.

Nope - they plan to survive month-to-month. No term limits, but nothing to prevent Party rivals from removing them, either, except for superior firepower. China’s rulers exist in a world of unending palace intrigues. And that is why they are always hyper-sensitive about criticism - it’s brute force rather than law that keeps them in power. Allowing criticism might give their subordinates ideas.

Just have the chicoms write a check for the trade deficit. THEN we talk about currency devaluation and intellectual property.
