NEW ORLEANSSterling Burnett doesnt always want to sit next to someone he doesnt know on a train, plane, or bus.
But hes willing to fight for the freedom of those same strangers when it comes time for them to purchase a motor vehicle.
What I care about is your freedom to choose the vehicle of your choice, Burnett, an environmental policy expert for the Heartland Institute, said during a panel discussion at the free-market think tanks America First Energy Conference that took a critical look at fuel-efficiency standards for cars and trucks.
I dont think government should be in the business of deciding the characteristics of the vehicle you drive, Burnett said of the so-called Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards. Thats what CAFE standards do. Automobility is a form of freedom.
Burnett, a senior fellow on environmental policy at the Heartland Institute, a nonprofit research and education organization based in Illinois, espoused the virtues of automotive freedom:

Ping.
You mean not everyone wants a vehicle limited to carrying only a few cubic feet of stuff, limited to a couple hours usage before needing a recharge, not being able to tow a trailer or cargo, and unable to climb hills with a large family? Gee, who would have thought that?
A fuel economy mandate is just a disguise for what really motivates leftists: size envy. Leftism is fundamentally driven by envy and surprisingly most of it is nothing more than simple size envy. Leftist want phallic looking passenger trains and skyscrapers as a form of size compensation.

Here’s my comment, sirs: Ethanol in gasoline is a disgrace - get eliminate it.
And get rid of the so-called ‘gas guzzling tax’ on muscle cars, it’s embarrassing.
Somehow, I doubt this guy will be employed much longer as an environmental policy expert for the Heartland Institute.
Good comment!

The CAFE standards are absolute tyranny. Id bet The ones Obongo unleashed on his way out the door are the reason Ford is giving up on cars. My wife worked at GM and in one the big office buildings they had an entire floor devoted to but staying within CAFE compliance. It is monstrous government control. In case hadnt noticed every car built shuts the moter off at every intersection. Thanks CAFE.
Ford will continue to make the Mustang.
I’d make sure CAFE went back to 25 mpg, for starters. I believe that’s where it originally was. Having a motor shut off at every intersection means the air conditioner doesn’t work consistently on hot summer days (or any other days).
By the way, wouldn’t the motor shutting off mean that more gasoline and battery power are used each time you restart it?
No, but it might mean you get T-boned if it shuts off at the wrong time. (just like ABS)
Also, it will cause extra wear and tear on the starter and ring-gear. More money for mechanics and parts vendors.
