High Altitude Venus Operational Concept (HAVOC)

Venus is an important destination for future space exploration endeavors. However, it presents a unique set of challenges. Though its internal geology is similar to Earth’s, its surface is hot enough to melt lead and is covered with craters, volcanoes, mountains, and lava plains.

The upper atmosphere of Venus, with similar pressure, density, gravity, and radiation protection to that of the surface of the earth, is relatively benign at 50 km. A lighter-than-air vehicle could carry either a host of instruments and probes, or a habitat and ascent vehicle for a crew of two astronauts to explore Venus for up to a month. Such a mission would require less time to complete than a crewed Mars mission. A recent internal NASA study of a High Altitude Venus Operational Concept (HAVOC) led to the development of an evolutionary program for the exploration of Venus, with focus on the mission architecture and vehicle concept for a 30 day crewed mission into Venus’s atmosphere.

Sounds neat, but from a risk perspective I think I’d rather go to Mars.

Sorta like Phoenix in July when the asphalt melts at the airport?

I’ve seen much speculation about terraforming Mars. I wonder if anything can be done to tame Venus’ atmosphere?

Large solar reflectors at the right distance in space. The atmosphere condenses, letting more heat/energy escape, more atmosphere condenses letting more heat/energy escape...

A lighter-than-air vehicle

Actually an (earth air) air vehicle would work. At 1 Bar, 80% nitrogen 20% 02 envelope would float high up in the CO2 high pressure atmosphere. You could live IN the envelope. You could go out on a ‘porch’ in the CO2 with just an mask and air tank. Your blood won’t boil at floatation elevations and it wouldn’t be that hot up there.

Not sure why this mission has to be manned, other than for sensational promotion.

"Venus is an important destination for future space exploration endeavors."

Why? We can't land there. Our machines melt on contact.

Venus has no magnetoshpere and very little water. Other than the novelty, why even go there?
