What should be made clear is that this book was written in early 1936, before he went to fight in the Spanish Civil War in late 1936... when he only knew the problems of English poverty and when Orwell still believed in utopian socialism.

It was before he went to Spain and saw the evil trap of the communist "solution"... before he was enlightened by his 1st hand on the ground experience of the tyranny of socialism - even when you were fighting on their side. It is from this later real 1st hand experience, AFTER "The Road to Wigan Pier" that Orwell wrote the the works (1984, Animal Farm, etc.) that he is now known for.

There are aspects of his discomfort with socialism in Wegan Pier.

Don’t misunderstand me please. I’m not running down Orwell. I read Animal Farm as a child and it was formative.
