Sullivan, who had been assured by the government in open court that no plaintiffs in the suit would be deported before midnight Friday, ordered the plane turned around, the ACLU said.

How does that work? In ATC terms? How does the plane turn around?

No doubt there are Freepers who know, cynwoody not among them!

Er... commercial aircraft generally carry just enough fuel for the sortie... with a tad extra.

The article doesn’t say whether the aircraft was a commercial passenger plane or perhaps a government aircraft.

Never the less, whoever owns the aircraft has communications to the cockpit via their own flight operations. Then, it’s just a matter of contacting ATC and amending the flight plan.
