Police said up to 70 people were injured when a truck carrying flammable cargo exploded after a traffic accident in Borgo Panigale, located on the outskirts of Bologna.

Officials did not immediately know what kind of explosives were in the tanker, but the news agency ANSA said liquefied petroleum gas was in the truck when it collided with another tanker truck just before 2 p.m., reports said.

Fireball-like flames and thick black smoke were seen near the Bologna airport. Flames from the overhead highway fell to the lower level, setting the vehicles below on fire and causing a second explosion.

Looks like it is roughly on par with the I-85 fire in Atlanta. It will be a good comparison to see how quickly they can get it can it reopened compared with the timeline for Georgia. (March 30-May 13 is the time to beat.)

My daughter just spent three weeks in Bologna just two miles from the airport and came home last week. Glad she’s home.

Very similar to a flammable cargo accident with fire a couple years ago at the Harrisburg, PA junction of Interstate 81 and US 322/22. Took out a flyover ramp for about nine months...fortunately no fatalities and no reason to suspect the ROP.

I have family that lives within 5km of this spot and I know that section of road well. Thank God they were not in the area at the time this happened. The video released today by the police shows that the fuel tanker failed to stop or even slow down, during a traffic jam, and smashed into the semi in front of it. My question is, how is it possible that a tanker exploded like this? I thought such vehicles were built with multiple layers of cladding/shielding to prevent this from happening.
