Best radio ever. Perfect for driving across Arizona late at night. “The few that are left will be more easily controllable.” Wow.

Art had so many freaks on his show that he lost all credibility. Ed Dames , Linda Morton Howe, and alien hunters.

Malachi Martin was straight up honest.
My favorite was hearing people tell their ghost stories to Art Bell during Halloween. That was fun.

"...oxycodone and hydrocodone, the sedative diazepam..."

Uhuh, there it is, the benzo that was called Valium before and mixed with opioids. Now we know, in yet another case.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Malachi Martin was a TOTAL and complete fraud, liar and disgrace. His life story, his being an "exorcist" and his absurd personal fantasy version of his role during Vatican II were complete lies.

I personally have the documentation to prove that, inconclusively, if you're interested.

“Drink and take pain pills....best way to stop breathing while sleeping.”

Correct. A couple of months ago a family friend died from the trifecta of pain pills, alcohol and Xanax.

We tried our best to warn her of the dangers but she was stubborn. She was a wonderful person but, sadly, didn’t take the danger seriously enough. She is sorely missed.

I am prescribed Xanax for panic disorder and when I underwent surgery recently, I was very careful and never combined the pain meds and the Xanax.

You can’t be too careful.

I take a sleeping medication. And, an additional med at the same time. The first is purple, the second is white. Apparently, the 1st med has changed to white also. I received a refill the other day. I shook out a pill, purple, opened the next bottle and shook out a white one. I did not look at the bottles. I discovered I took a double dose of the sleep med when I was ridiculously groggy in the morning. Looked at the bottles and......

Yes, I know many people take pain meds incorrectly. However, I also know people whose lives would be miserable without them. I would rather be a little foggy than in constant pain.

My story is just to show sometimes, it is an accident. I also know on this med, I forget things. I am glad I did not take another one!

Definitely. You want the pain to stop. But opiates work a certain way. And he limbic brain has a finite capacity to keep the heart and lungs going. Mostly, you can do both. There is a tiny little window though where your dose (maybe contrasted with your most recent doses) can just be that much more effective and drop the dang system.

RE addiction, there is almost no addiction with the desperately in pain and the dying. Opiates make those last days or months bearable. They should never be denied to our sickest loved ones. My friend was suffering terminal liver and pancreatic cancer and she was able to take her self-given shots at will and never feared addiction nor hugely increasing dosage. It stayed pretty much the same and allowed her to connect with loved ones.

Praying for you to get the break from pain you need ASAP.

Hard to know what happened - might have been in a lot of chronic pain and decided that he needed some “extra relief”.

Used to love Art Bell. No show like it ever.

He was great for late-night long distance driving.

The Quickening. I’ve listened for decades. if you want a laugh, look for Phil Hendrie.

Phil Hendrie is amazing, but if I recall, his politics sucked.

I was on his show twice. I loved Art’s shows. What a voice.

He wasn’t a drinker. He was in pain for years. Used to be a telephone lineman, fell off a pole from the top. Hurt his back, really bad. Suffered with it all his life.

Miss those shows more than I can say.

I got serious insomnia in the early 90’s. I played with the radio dial looking for a talk show instead of music which would help be get back to sleep. Art Bell filled the bill. Sometimes he was so interesting, I stayed wake. Mostly, I could sleep with the radio on. He certainly was not afraid to tackle any topic. RIP, friend. Thanks for helping me get thru that insomnia.

Thank you. I’m lucky that the discs are not acting up presently (one cervical, one lumbar) . I pray that no one has to deal with spinal or other chronic pain issues either. Pain pills really do not work
