Google reported to launch censored search engine in China, marking shift in strategy

The US internet giant’s modified search app will blacklist sites on human rights, democracy, religion and other issues deemed sensitive by the Chinese government

Code-named “Dragonfly”, Google’s Chinese search engine project has been underway for more than a year and could be introduced in the market within the next six to eight months, the report said.

The Chinese Google search app will automatically identify and filter websites blocked by the country’s Great Firewall, preventing them from showing up in the results. Users will be notified that results have been removed to comply with “statutory requirements”.

Shares of Alphabet, Google's parent, rose 1 per cent as of 10:48 a.m. in New York, headed for the first gain in four days. Baidu, the dominant search engine operator in China, dropped 5.4 per cent, set for the steepest fall since May 18.

Google broke their algorithm in their quest to bury deplorables. It’s not even worth using anymore. Even Yahoo. gives better results.

It won’t work. The Party wants a domestic provider to control the search engine market. The only way for Google to supplant Baidu is if it moves, lock, stock and barrel, to China.

No shift.

I watched in mounting horror in mid-July 2007 as google systematically and deliberately “disappeared” over a half million hits on image searches for “obama birth certificate”.

I’ve seen a few alternatives to google listed here on FR, but have been sloppy about it.

Anyone have a search engine they’d like to recommend?

Google got rid of the “don’t be evil” slogan at their headquarters. I guess they came to terms with the fact that they are evil.
