President Trump suggested Wednesday that a government shutdown would help Republicans ahead of the midterm elections in November, adding that he would take the step if necessary to see his plan for a border wall come to fruition.
In an interview with conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, the president called the issue of shutting down the government over obtaining funding for his border security program a "great campaign issue."
"I actually think it would be a positive," Trump said Wednesday. "It's like pulling teeth, getting these guys [lawmakers] to get it done. And you have no idea how tough I've been. And I say hey, if you have a shutdown, you have a shutdown."
"Now, the shutdown can also take place after the [midterm elections]," Trump continued, "[But] I happen to think that it would be a great political thing. People want border security, it's not just the wall, Rush, as you know."
"You could do it before the election or after the election," he added. "I think its a great campaign issue. I think it would be great before [the elections]. I actually think wed get more and thered be more pressure on the other side, because were doing it because the Democrats are not giving us the votes."
He also noted that "Im not doing it for politics."
"Im doing it because its the right thing to do," Trump said.
His comments on Limbaugh's program came a day after he tweeted that he didn't care what the "political ramifications" were to pursuing a shutdown over immigration reform and border security before November's midterms, which are less than 100 days away.
"I dont care what the political ramifications are, our immigration laws and border security have been a complete and total disaster for decades, and there is no way that the Democrats will allow it to be fixed without a Government Shutdown," Trump said Tuesday.
"A Government Shutdown is a very small price to pay for a safe and Prosperous America!" he added.
Trump made similar remarks on Monday during a joint press conference with Italy's prime minister, adding that he would threaten a shutdown if Congress didn't act first.
"If we don't get border security after many, many years of talk within the United States, I would have no problem doing a shutdown," Trump said.
Several Republicans have expressed skepticism over how successful a GOP-caused shutdown over immigration would be. A shutdown in 2013 over Obamacare caused the party's approval ratings to tank. GOP leaders in Congress are hopeful that a shutdown can be avoided without a major battle involving the White House.
Trump noted Wednesday that he accepts the "opinion" of some members of the party who believe that the immigration fight should wait until after the midterms, but still thinks it would be better "to do before."
Bush League Republicans do not want a wall or enforcement.
If they did we would not have needed Trump.
I heard his interview with Rush.
He sounded like he is backing off.
I LOVE this POTUS, in other words hes telling these open borders BASTARDS that if they want to keep their jobs this November they better DAMNED WELL FUND OUR WALL!!! He has NO PROBLEM shutting down the government and putting ALL their jobs in jeopardy!!! GO TRUMP!!!! He doesnt NEED the stinking job he made his wealth the hard way before he entered the SWAMP!!!!
A profile in courage.
He also noted that “Im not doing it for politics.
He just confused the hell out of senate and congress gravy train riders.
3D or 4D chess by Trump.
It’s not the Democrats stopping this, it’s Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan! (Paul will be “Gone Boy”)
This a ploy (or maybe not) to get a commitment from Mitch.
“The Art of the Deal” at work. Only Trump knows what Trump is up to.
The above is an attempted link to what I posted much earlier on the subject. Not sure it will work.
Didn’t sound that way to me.
Sounded more like he will put more pressure on the Repubbies before the election..................
;)

Build the wall and if need be shut the government down, if anything it would give Trump a boost in his ratings. It may teach those RINOS a much needed lesson as it is becoming harder and harder to tell them apart from any socialist. That continuously reaching across the isle was getting boring if not aggravating to say the least.
The only reason socialists are so enamored with open borders and the influx of illegals has little to do with compassion and everything with as yet undocumented socialist who eventually count on the government what it will give them, not to mention a cheap labor force desired by some in name only republicans.
We sure don’t need to go down the road which eventually leads to a warmed over version of Venezuela as it was envisioned by our FORMER illustrious leader, who was hell bent to lead us down the garden path and would have been continued by crooked Hillary had she been his successor.
Especially since Fedzilla never really shuts down.
A perfect opportunity to educate the electorate.
Then we get about the business of ennobling our culture.
We begin by educating our populace about the religious roots and historical wisdom of our Founding Fathers and those giants of Western Civilization upon whose shoulders they stand.
We protect the religious freedom of those who were envisioned in the original intent of the Founders, excluding those in which the overthrow of our country and Constitution is part of their dogma.
Would have been a great year one promise kept. All those chuck n nancy spendathons without even the empty threat of a veto.
Nice to hear its important again. Gee thanks. Im sure i trust you to mean it this time.
The shutdown should be done before the midterms. The shutdown should start at 12:01am on Oct 1, 2018, the first day of the new fiscal year.
The shutdown will occur if President Trump does not sign funding for the new fiscal year. I don’t know how he could force a shutdown between now and then.
DO IT.
Better a shutdown now than a total meltdown later.
