Your conspiracy should have prompted Mueller probe on every president elected since 1922.

You can’t hack if it’s not on the worldwideweb. Who the fock made it vulnerable? Stupid fools.

The control systems are complex microprocessor controls these days... remote services from the manufacturer are quite common. You can get them to log in and fix a problem within hours or minutes verses days or weeks for a field service engineer to fly in. That could be millions and millions of dollars of lost revenue.

Usually these remote access connections are "air gapped" with a switch that is normally turned off.

What sort of switch is it?

Would it isolate the control room in time, before malware could be transferred ?

What sort of switch is it?

Would not really have to be a 'switch.' Could be something as simple as an ethernet cable that is plugged in only when remote diagnostics need to be run.

Kudos to you for living off the grid for a few days.

Unfortunately, some of the hugh transformers used by the power companies are very hard to transport, are very expensive and spares, due to cost, are not stocked.

Try living off the grid for a couple of weeks or a month. Eventually you’ll run outta beer :)

It’s just a switch that disconnects the control system network from the outside world. It’s as if you unplugged your Ethernet cable. Normally the switch is open, so there is a physical “air gap” that hackers would not be able to surmount.

However, during rare maintenance operations where the switch is closed, the utility should have fairly advanced cyber security. Virtual Private Networks, firewalls, encryption, etc. Key word being “should.”

Jon Preston is correct. The grid could be hardened for a measly $400 million but the govt won’t do it. There are 9 substations in various locations that if taken out at the same time would bring down the NE grid. That would be me sitting in the dark.

Forget solar flare or EMP at some point the Iranians or another rogue country will likely take down one side of the countrys power grid. The Iranians perpetrate something like 10,000 attacks per Day on our grid. It’s just a matter of time. It won’t be the end of the world but it will be a miserable existence for 6-12 months. We keep one year of survival food, three 55 gallon water containers filled, two gravity water filters, 5 propane tanks for the grill in the garage at all times.

upchuck :"Taking down just a small portion of our extremely vulnerable power grid will be devastating.
Powers that be have known this for years but have done nothing much about it.
Try turning off the power to your house and turning off all the electronic devices (phones, etc.) for a weekend.
It’ll be a real eye opener."

Lots of reading material on this. “One Second After” is a good one ."

Exactly true !
Imagine no electricity for cellphones, no internet, no refrigeration, no power to pump gasoline,
no sewage pumps, no transportation, no communications, etc.
A return to the 1890's, .. not by choice !
Learn to live the day in simplicity, .. like the Amish.

H/T to LucyT for the reminder of our reliance on electrical power and convienience.

If our power grid comes down blame our government for not hardening & upgrading.

><

Bullseye!

There is absolutely no excuse for us to be this vulnerable.

“Russian meddling is NOT a good thing !”

The so called “Russian meddling” is harmless, compared to “Russia scare” spreaded by russophobe lunatics.

British media (the Guardian) blatantly meddled in 2004 American election (in John Kerry’s favor), and the Spanish prime minister called for a regime change in America.

No sanctions on Britain and Spain.

I don’t know what shenanigans are going on with regard to Russia and their activity in the Arctic and outer space, nuclear or otherwise. Personally, I am of the belief man’s impact on the environment may be profound, but not on climate. God controls the weather as far as I am concerned.

However: Russia, along with China and Europe did try to hold our economy captive to the disastrous Paris Climate Agreement. Trump thankfully pulled us out of that - along with the Iran Nuke Deal. Meanwhile Russia has a vested interest in their continued nuclear exchanges with Iran.

The wildfires in CA are doing more to put carbon in the air than anything else we can do.

All the expense and trouble of trying to scale back CO2 emissions can be undone with one wildfire or volcanic eruption.

Yes mother nature...or rather, our creator GOD has the final say on the climate. That is what I believe. But in terms of geopolitics: environmentally compromising weaponry are most assuredly being advanced and improved upon. Not just capabilities being explored in the Arctic, but outer space, AND I forgot to mention underwater!

Actually, just in June: the U.S. quietly expanded upon sanctions against Russia for their build-up of undersea cables. I am not an engineer or expert on the matter, but the ramifications are clearly threatening enough.

Of course, our media would rather focus on Mueller. Meanwhile, the landscape of warfare is changing and we are already at war...just not in a traditional sense as it’s so covert or being fought on turfs like cyberspace. (Thankfully, I don’t believe anything akin to the World Wars of the 20th century will take place any time soon.)

” but why would the damage or screw with our grid now?”

They will pick Election Day 2018 to screw with the elections.

Or we are hearing about “Russia hacking the power grid” so the progs can pull the plug, mess with the election again, and will have primed us for a convenient scapegoat. LOL

No doubt that's what they have in mind.

The problem is, too much has been exposed and I doubt that that many people are going to be duped again.

Living without power at best would be a horrible inconvenience. It could also be a killer. How much water can you get without electricity? How can you keep food cold without electricity. Without electricity you will have a big change in your diet. How will you cook your food, on your propane grill? Yes you could do that for a few days but how will you replace the propane. Without electricity the gas station can’t even pump the gas they have. You might have a couple hundred miles worth of gas in your car, better not use it too quickly.

I would imagine if we are hacked in some way the utilities will not take long to disconnect and get back on line and stay disconnected from the web.

I got solar for my house pretty much because I would rather not have to go through the hassle but I will still be affected because everyone else will be.

It isnt just Russia and it isnt just cyber risk...I remember years ago a tranformer (large one) being taken out by rifle shot, draining the oil and burning up works. Can be done from a distance. It seems to me that it was reported that taking out a dozen or so transformers, in the right places could bring down most or all of the grid nationwide!
