“The stateor, to make the matter more concrete, the governmentconsists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office.
Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they cant get, and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time it is made good by looting A to satisfy B.
In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods.” — H L Mencken
re Kamala Harris: you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
A lot of California’s woes are the same in NJ; where we do have rent control (primarily cities) they turn the place into dumps. We’ve reached the same point with takers versus maker, though maybe a bit more recently than CA - we at least had the taxcutting Chris Christie for 2 terms (and then he couldn’t run due to term limits, and he was being attacked 24/7/365 by the enemedia a la Trump). Last fall we had a wealthy lib win the governorship after publicly pledging to raise taxes - a true indication that more VOTERS were riding the wagon than pulling it (we’ve seen a steadily growing number of illegals invade the state, but they couldn’t vote).
I’ve mentioned in other threads that Obama had to nationalize his socialism because the libs/Dems can’t watch their sh!tholes face “brain drains” as productive people and employers leave for greener pastures; they need to get their clutching hands onto their incomes somehow, regardless of where they flee.
I was surprised that one of the last two inhabitable parts of Newark NJ (North Newark) was dealing with a large number of abandoned properties in the last few years. Newark is a sh!thole, but county, state, and federal handouts prevented them from re-assessing their properties (so they were ridiculously low compared to any other part of the state - while the municipal government squandered much more than any other part of the state). It was a very Hispanic area for decades, and had old, large homes when you move away from the main arteries. Still has some viable businesses beyond liquor stores and such; it just all fell apart within the last couple of years. Homes that don’t have bars over the doors and windows now have boards over them.
Didn’t we institute rent control in Dresden Germany by firebombing it?
