Fort Pierce, Florida has a large Haitian community.
Many work seasonally in citrus processing plants there and collect unemployment and welfare after harvest season.

In the mid 1960’s when I was attending UC Berkeley getting Mechanical Engineering Degree, I worked summers at the DelMonte peach cannery in Emeryville ( it’s been long gone for years, being replaced by Pixar the animation company). I supervised the entire workforce on the second floor. I had a young Hispanic (mid-20’s) who worked ten weeks for me, and later in the year another ten weeks at the Del Monte raisin plant in Fresno. Since he had TEN CHILDREN, the rest of the year, he “got by” with AFDC money from the State. Even back then it was hundreds of dollars per month per child. He took in thousands of taxpayer dollars. Never knew whether he was a citizen or not.
