Y’all are starting to see it. The Germans have a big problem with nationalism for obvious historical reasons. They cannot grasp that just because a tyrant used/hijacked THEIR nationalist sentiments, that does not mean everybody else views nationalism as toxic like they do.
They have long sought to subsume their German identity into a broader European identity within which they can express Yurp nationalist thoughts without feeling bad about it. It helps this sentiment along that as the dominant economic power in Europe, they stand to gain by far the most from ever more European integration and ever more power for Brussels.
Other Europeans see this. There is a widespread recognition on the part of many that “more Europe” really means “more German control”. The Brits have opted out. They don’t have the same sense of guilt/shame over their history. The Eastern Europeans having only recently regained control over their own countries after 2 generations of Soviet domination are in no hurry to submit to German domination.
The only ones in Europe as anti nationalist as the Germans are the Belgians and that’s largely because with a country composed of 2 ethnic and language groups who each hate the other, they too have a problem expressing nationalist thoughts.
On a side note: its amazing how the Germans manage to overlook the socialist part of national socialism. Somehow they don’t have a problem with that....
As I said, the Germans felt so guilty about the Holocaust, they imported millions of Muslims who hate the Jews even more than the Nazis did.
International socialism has always taken advantage of patriotism to expand itself. Even Red China these days speaks of “socialism with Chinese characteristics”.
