There’s a reason restaurants everywhere are failing: Red Hen Syndrome
The Spectator ^ | 07/22/2018 | Rod Liddle

It may be that we’ve had all we can take, especially when these outlets are suffused with such self-importance. --------------------------------------------------------

The Red Hen is where the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, took her family for a bite to eat, and from which she was evicted when the homosexual staff recognised who she was. Her rude defenestration was supported by the restaurant’s owner, citing Donald Trump’s reluctance to allow transgender people to serve in the US military. It is, clearly, a liberals-only restaurant. They should write that on the front door, so that everything is clear, but as a sop maybe have a water fountain out front labelled ‘for conservatives’.

--------------------------------------------------------

But support for the horrible Red Hen was outweighed by about five to one by enraged conservatives, one of whom advised immigrants that the restaurant was offering free meals to illegal aliens and all they had to do was ring the number, which they quoted in full. My favourite, though, came from a local bloke who said that people in the area were disgusted with the Red Hen and that the owner was ‘a New York transplant’ and related to Meryl Streep. Enough said!

--------------------------------------------------------

Cooking is not terribly difficult. Nor is it an art. It is at best what Orwell referred to as a ‘half art’, like photography. We have undoubtedly benefited from the increased prestige conferred upon people who can put stuff in a frying pan and stir it quite adeptly, these past 40 years. But latterly it has also bred within the restaurateurs a distance from and even a contempt towards the people they are serving. So that they are now agreed that the feedback they receive from their customers is utterly worthless: they know what they are doing and nobody can tell them otherwise.

I was up in the Boston area this weekend and went to the Blue Moon Grill in Wakefield.
......................................................

I’m typing this less than a mile from there, right next to the place I usually go, The Omelette Headquarters. Folks will wait outside in the dead of winter for a table.

We use our Foreman grill for everything you can imagine and more. Fish, yum! Chicken is also OK but better if you slice it. We even do toasted ham and cheese sandwiches.

George Forman was a genius!

The author is an idiot for not recognizing that good cooking is an art and not as easy as throwing something into a frying pan.

The only place we go anymore is the Olive Garden.

We are there because the food is acceptable for Italian. The key reason we go back is the service. It is uniformly excellent. I have NEVER had lousy service in the Olive Garden.

I grew up in an Italian city (Syracuse/Utica/Rome) where you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting one. Back in the day, the food was sensational for traditional Italian, and the service was magnificent.

Now, restaurant service is uniformly lousy (excepting OG) and even worse if you have kids. It’s to the point where we won’t go out with the kids, and without the kids, we’re not going out.

A place like the Red Whore in VA. is not a place I would consider going with my kids.

“What on earth is Italian with a southern flair-—Italian is Italian?”

Double the garlic. Using the whole garlic cloves. Killer Italian.

The victims of the Defenestration of Prague were Roman Catholic nobles who were caught up in a Protestant rebellion. After the event, they quickly hightailed it out of Dodge but were soon back in the saddle after the Holy Roman Empire crushed the revolt in 1620.

Defenestration seems to be a local custom. In 1948, Jan Masaryk, Czechoslovakia's foreign minister, died after being helped through a window by the Communists, who had seized control of the country a few days earlier.

Much less messy to cook the bacon in the oven, too.

I had Sunday brunch at a restaurant that had the perfect thick cut bacon. Not soggy, undercooked, or burnt (over cooked). They bake it in an oven, instead of using a frying pan.

I butterflied a pork loin out flat, sprinkled feta cheese, jalapenos and garlic, a layer of spinach and mushrooms, a little black pepper and Tony’s, rolled it back up and grilled it along with some squash.

Art? I was hungry!
