How to Take on China's Navy: America Could Deploy Diesel Submarines
The National Interest ^ | July 21st, 2018 | by James Holmes

In other words, if Beijing wants to deny U.S. forces access to the theater , U.S. and Japanese commanders should reply in kind. They can deploy submarines along the first island chain to fight in concert with surface forces, detachments of missile-armed land troops, and shore-based tactical aircraft.

"Underway on nuclear power ", radioed the skipper of USS Nautilus in 1955, after taking history's first nuclear-powered attack submarine to sea for the first time. Nautilus's maiden cruise left an indelible imprint on the navy. Her success, cheered on by the likes of Admiral Hyman Rickover, the godfather of naval nuclear propulsion, helped encode the supremacy of atomic power in the submarine force's cultural DNA.

Things were never the same after that. America built its last diesel-electric sub, once the state of the art, not long after Nautilus took to the sea. Not since 1990 has the U.S. Navy operated conventionally powered boats. It's been longer than that since they were frontline fighting ships. For a quarter-century, then, it's been all nukes, all the time. No U.S. shipbuilder even constructs diesel boats nowadays.

DE boats are quieter, but have no range. They are not suited for the Blue Water where the USN is the dominant force in the world.

However, 40 small AIP boats could be quite useful in the Med, South China Sea and the Persian Gulf. In fact they'd be better than Virginia class boats for that role.

Need about 40 Super quiet DE Boats—like the the ones built by Germany a while back. That would help, More light Frigates, maybe 12 of them. and about 10 Fast Drone carriers—Like Jeep Carriers of WW II to launch copters and drones—the warcraft of the future. Maybe two or three Heavy Monitors
for bombardment — armed with rail guns.

"They are not suited for the Blue Water where the USN is the dominant force in the world."

And yet DE submarines successfully served in all "blue waters" for decades before the wide introduction of nukes.

Your analysis of quiet diesel subs is spot on. They are not long range blue water boats. They can be devastating killers close to shore. In our nuclear navy there is a place for these very quiet diesel subs.

Relative to Admiral Hyman Rickover, he was a visionary. Our ability to launch absolute destruction of our enemies from the depths of the ocean and even the arctic ocean is because of his vision. If an enemy attacked us and destroyed each and every one of out land based missiles, and nuclear aircraft, which is highly doubtful, destruction will come from the depths of our seas to our enemy. Thank you Admiral Hyman Rickover!

Just one of our boomers (missile launching subs) could not totally destroy Russia. Just one could make it a no longer functioning society. We have many boomers, they run silent and deep and in their missile tubes lay havoc.

Enough to kill a lot of Americans and sink American ships, smart ass.

Do not ever arrogantly underestimate an enemy.

“And yet DE submarines successfully served in all “blue waters” for decades before the wide introduction of nukes. “

And the way we killed most of them then was when they were transiting in open ocean and before they go to their area of operations. Or going home.

And how long is it going to take to build 40 subs?

In 1943, probably 14 months. Today, about ten years.

When We need them, we will never have the luxury of time.

With us and the Japanese building at capacity we could probably build 6 per year without slowing down the other shipbuilding programs.

Subcontract them to Japan and Korea. They both build good stuff quickly and they may even buy some to offset the cost. We can work together as we have very good weapons systems and submarine expertise.

WWII was such a disaster without nuclear subs.

Dump statements herein. USA has and is transferring trillion of dollars in wealth to China. Those that can’t figure out these many trillions of dollars empowers China to build just about anything it wants; well I don’t really know how to help?

With today's sophisticated sensors and highly accurate long range missiles, the naval operational environment is exceptionally challenging. That is why modern surface combatants have multiple layers of anti-missile defenses, stealthy shaping, and advanced survivability and damage control.

In operation, modern submarines have to remain submerged almost all the time if they expect to avoid detection and accomplish their missions. That requires the extraordinary power of nuclear propulsion for long-range fleet subs. For missions with short operational range, conventional AIP can work. That is why Europe and Japan have found AIP subs suitable for their need for defense of their nearby seas.

In concept, a couple of dozen conventional AIP subs could be highly useful for the US Navy. The technology though is not fully mature and it would take years of research and development for the US to design and ready a new type of submarine for production. In the meantime and for years to come, US sub building capacity is expected to be fully occupied with producing the Virginia and Columbia classes of nuclear subs.

To get more subs and have them on station sooner, we should push our nuclear sub production schedule and add to the numbers authorized. At least for now, conventional AIP should probably be a technology research project for the USN -- but nothing more.

You prove my point.

We could lose a Carrier and 5,000+ men and still win a battle.

Arrogance/stupidity is deadly.

“Catalog for us all the great conquests and successful battles won by the ChiComms in the last 50 years.”

A gazillion dollar trade imbalance over the past 20 years or so in an undeclared trade war.

Specifically the Battles of Walmart, Harbor Freight, Target and Amazon.
