(From Netease) Chinese folks have always had the self-entertaining mindset to compare little things to big renowned things even just for the slightest resemblance. We had a post last year talking about a homemade knockoff Lamborghini by a 25 years old guy.

Recently a chef from Zigong City, Sichuan Province became famous on the Internet for spending only about 4000 yuan in designing and handcrafting what netizens called a knockoff "Hummer".

The 2 meter long, 1.5 meter high homemade auto took Qu Zhibo 3 years to build since he was busy running his own restaurant. Small as it is, it has everything an auto needed, it burns gasoline and can be driven in the similar manners of a normal car. The only difference lies in the starting - one have to start the kart from behind before jumping into the driver seat to drive, since the engine that remodeled from a motorcycle locates at the end.

Looks more like a landscaper’s cart. But I give him credit for being able to do it.

He was building it faster than the rust was taking it apart. That's all that counts.

He should start mass producing these and selling them in the USA. It costs him $590 to build and people waiting for their Tesla would gladly pay $999 to own one of these. I bet it gets great mileage.

This sort of creativity is what years ago, made America and England grand.

Everything from matchstick villages, to backyard tinkering, expands the brain and possibilities.

Making something from scratch in an environment without too many laws to stop you, is foundational to economic success.

We have lost this.

I applaud him.

“Totally cool.”

Agreed! As a kid we built a go-kart out of some old wagon wheels (a really narrow base), 2x4 lumber and a rope for the steering. The second year we had it we actually had the rope around a spool hooked up to an old steering wheel. Had a Briggs and Stratton motor on it and a centrifugal clutch. The motor we got for free from a a neighbor, and my buddy and I went in halvsies on the clutch. (After a few years we dismantled the thing - he kept the clutch, and I never did get any money back. Not that I'm still bitter 45 years later or anything).

He and I were the only ones that could drive it okay - everybody else would tip it over it was so top-heavy.

In the winter I would “tune up” the engine in my basement. Take it apart, clean stuff, and put it back together again. Never could figure out why it ran better with the 1 or 2 bolts/screws that were left over! This would have been 4th - 6th grade I suppose.

Crazy to think my mom let me do that stuff in the basement. “Turn it off!!” I do recall my old-man ragging on me (a little) for not cleaning up his tools and putting them back.

My sister emailed me earlier this year that my “racing partner” passed away. (Hmm - I don't suppose his wife might come across the centrificul clutch?) RIP Mike.

He was the guy that my mom would always blame all the trouble we got into on.

I was the guy that Mike's mom would always blame!

Over here we call those golf carts or possibly side-by-side off road vehicles like what Polaris makes.
