My dad worked in the steel mill and he called his best friend The Polock. It was an affectionate nickname for the biggest, kindest man I had ever seen in my young life. You could barely understand a word he said but you always knew his meaning.

I have always had a very warm spot in my heart for the Polish people because of him.

Very nice people. Krakow in particular is a gem, and Auschwitz is a place everyone should see so it’s never forgotten. But their cuisine makes British food seem spicy. Don’t forget to pack some Tabasco or Sriracha sauce.

You should go. Its fabulous. Easy, cheap, wonderful sights and people and food....was there for three weeks last year.
