MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexicos president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he would cancel the planned purchase of eight military helicopters from the United States as part of cost-cutting measures.
Lopez Obrador, who handily won this months presidential election on pledges to fight corruption and cut government waste, said there had been plans to pay 26 billion pesos ($1.36 billion) for the helicopters to be used by Mexicos navy.
This purchase is going to be canceled because we can not make this expenditure, Lopez Obrador told reporters on Wednesday after meeting with incoming legislators from his MORENA party.
Lopez Obrador is due to take office on Dec. 1.
In April, the U.S. government said Mexico had requested to buy eight MH-60R Seahawk multi-mission helicopters and that the sale would strengthen Mexicos ability to fight criminal organizations.

AMERICA vs THE GLOBALISTS.
Very interesting that you read that. It wouldn’t surprise me either.
170 million each? 8 helos for 1.36 Billion US? I would say that yes, he can get a better deal if he shops around.
The Mi-17/8 are a cheap tried and true helicopter all the way around so if money is the issue I could see that route. The most produced helicopters in the world.
If he’s trying to be fiscally Conservative, that’s okay.
If he decides to buy someone else’s helicopters, that’s his choice.
If he thinks he’s going to turn the nation into a Russian satellite, he’s going to meet with some serious resistance.
The Mi-17 is a good helicopter. Not as good as an H-60 but a lot cheaper to buy and operate.
He’s thinking about politics not his country
Trump should buy the eight helicopters and give them to the Border Patrol!
I think he’s being cheap. It would be in no ones interest to cozy up to the Russians.
A flying tank. Rugged as hell and can take a beating.
What does Mexico need a military for anyway? They are in our shadow, not like anyone—aside from us—are going to invade them.
Mexico uses their military to massacre college students.
Not our problem. But them not buying our helicopters might reduce this. And if Mexico is not respecting its citizens, how about we send home the 25% of their population home and let them fix Mexico?

Easy to learn to fly and work on as well. I did read somewhere though that you need a crew of 3 to fly it and it takes all 3 to fly it. Pilot, co-pilot and navigator/engineer. No fancy electronics on it.
Mexico’s govt is trying to fight the narco armies, but they are like the keystone kops. The narco’s give their Marines a run for the money. If the Mexican govt ends up buying Russian Helos, they will be in the hands of the cartels shorty.
Good. We shouldnt be arming an enemy country anyway.
He had a bit of a mouth on him during the campaign.
While I tend to agree with you, I wouldn’t rule any foolishness out.
