A man is in custody after police say he attacked a Weymouth, Massachusetts, police officer Sunday morning, taking his gun and shooting him, before also killing an elderly woman who was shot through a window in her home.

Emanuel Lopes, 20, of Weymouth, has been identified as the suspect in the shootings of the officer and the woman. Officer Michael Chesna, 42, was rushed to the hospital and died, authorities said. The woman who was killed has not been identified as police have not yet notified her next of kin.

The shooting happened about 8 a.m. near Torrey Street and Burton Terrace in Weymouth, about 17 miles south of Boston, following a traffic stop, WCVB-TV reports. Authorities said Weymouth Police had responded about 7:30 a.m. to a report of an erratic driver near the South Shore Hospital. When officers arrived, they found the car had been involved in a one-vehicle accident and the driver had fled from the scene.

Officers began searching for the driver and he was located by Chesna. The driver, later identified as Lopes, then attacked and killed Chesna, according to police. He was later taken into custody after exchanging gunfire with other officers and shooting into a home, authorities said.

According to MassLive.com, Lopes, who goes by the name Manny Lopes, was arrested in Weymouth in October on drug charges.

“Lopes, then 19, was held on $5,040 bail after that arrest. According to WBZ-TV’s Cheryl Fiandaca, Lopes was released on pre-trial probation after that arrest. The only condition was random drug-testing. His next hearing in that case is set for July 30. According to Massachusetts law, pre-trial probation is a program that allows for charges to be dismissed if the defendant completes the requirements of the program. “

Unbelievable.

He’ll plea down to manslaughter and get out in 6 years. Probably will get a job with Senator Pocahontas.

“Lopes” is Portuguese. He just has that stupid Islam-o-beard.

Jury is still out on this degenerate’s legal status. I’m going to say he’s an anchor baby. We shall see....

This could end up being a two-for slam against the destructive lib narrative. Hopefully more facts will emerge.

Boston talk radio will be all over this tomorrow, too, especially Howie Carr at 3PM - WRKO 680 AM.

Just remember that Massachusetts also gave us Willie Horton. That proved to be a particular blessing for Governor Dukakis in his presidential run in 1988..

Selling cocaine to kids and he gets less bail than a tax evader. That is blood directly on that judges hands.

I didn't know Lopes is Portuguese.

I always thought Davey Lopes of the '70s Dodgers was Mexican-American.

Southeastern MA,including the islands, and into Rhode Island have had very large Portugese populations for approx. 100 years. They came as fisherman.

#7. Remember that Massachusetts also gave us Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Elizabeth Warren, and the Soviet agents from Harvard and Yale.

Gosh, that sounds just like what Michael "The Gentle Giant" Brown tried to do.

The info was easily available to anyone who cared to look. Part of the problem was that early reports had different spellings of the perp’s first name.

But how did a guy like this get the drop on an experienced cop and vet? Was Officer Chesna less worried about defending himself and the public than he was about getting sued or locked up? If so, that just cost two lives.

Well, he got a big ass rock thrown at his head, but I wonder if it was from behind... ?

That detail is still a little sketchy.

Well, another problem is he was on patrol alone apparently. In an age where perps are more to use deadly force agains LE, it makes less sense for cops to respond alone. I wish retirees who are screaming about their pensions would keep their on the beat brethren in mind. Those pensions come at a dear cost, and not just to taxpayers.

Most won't! I know a few who actually understand and have voted to take pension cuts to pay for MORE active police officers - due to the rise in deadly attacks against the police. But, the FAR MAJORITY will NOT ever agree to any kind of pay cut, regardless of how many of their fellow brethren are gunned down! SAD!
