“As an American whose ancestors were African slaves, I hate racism.”

Perfect fit for an article in the New Yrker. They are on the no-no list on FR.

Do a search for an article called "My Great-Grandfather, the Nigerian Slave-Trader"

A real eye-opener for black Americans who don't know the full story of slavery.

In the 1850’s the Democrats were the party of not only maintaining slavery in the South, but expanding slavery to the Western territories. Justice Taney ( Dred Scott) was appointed by that democrat icon and paragon of diversity Andrew Jackson. The opposition Whig party was split on slavery, one faction ambivalent, the other abolitionist. This split, along with efforts by the democrats to make sure states created out of the Western territories were slave states caused the Republican party to split from the Whigs and eventually led to the election of Lincoln. The Republican party was generally in favor of black civil rights, including the right to vote, up until the “Progressive” era of the early 1900’s.
