Texas tower shooting in the 60’s, I think the guy that shot the sniper was a ex - navy guy deputized on the spot by a local Police officer.

Lots of locals that were hunters brought out their deer rifles, make the shooter keep his head down. Local PD officer climbed the tower, ultimat ly killing the shooter. Lost some friends that day.

You are correct. That was my memory of a report I’d read as well. I hope these are facts below:

“Martinez recalled: “He says, ‘Are we playing for keeps?’ I said, ‘Damn right we are.’ And he said, ‘You better deputize me then.’

“And that’s when I found out he was a civilian. And I said, ‘Well, consider yourself deputized.’” “

Allen Crum was a civilian. His family was killed by Whitman within the Tower. He and Officer Ramiro “Ray” Martinez were that day’s “self-appointed protectors”.

Truly.

This is the Caption:

"Four men who were at the UT Tower shooting met with the news media in Austin on August 2, 1966. From left: Allen Crum, Austin police officer Ramiro Martinez, Houston McCoy, and Jerry Day. AP/Ted Powers"

The 2 heroes are on the left.
