Extensive article, but did I miss this? What did the first guy go nuts over to start this mess?

The gunman thought he was under attack by demonic transexuals. No joke. The gunman was known to police as a loony and somehow he still had access to a firearm.

I hope we never find out.

Our natural tendency to want to know why plays into the shooter’s desire for fame and notoriety. The shooter desperately wants to tell the whole World about his delusions and grievances. We should not accommodate him.

Ultimately, it is always some damn stupid nutball thing. There is never a satisfactory explanation. People died because the shooter was a crazy delusional jerk. The particulars don’t matter.

When I was learning to golf, whenever I would shank one into the woods, I would ask what I did wrong. My rather taciturn father would just say “Why do you want to know, do you want to do it again?” Often the search for what went wrong is counterproductive.

Happened over Memorial Day weekend so that might be how you missed it and it also didn’t fit the media narrative so it fell out of coverage pretty quickly. The first guy went nuts because he was nuts, period. It’s covered in the article how this guy was missed in various screenings, including a psychological exam required for taking a course and getting licensed as an armed security guard. If you’re familiar with psychological tests, it’s the MMPI - Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Any glitches in the scoring gets you an interview with the psych.
