SPRINGFIELD, Ill. McDonalds salads will be off the menu in two Midwest states until further notice because they may be linked to a parasite infection
Health officials in Illinois and Iowa are investigating an increase in people becoming sick from a parasite that causes intestinal illness.
The Illinois Department of Public Health said in a news release Thursday that it has received confirmation of about 90 cases of cyclosporiasis, which is caused by the Cyclospora parasite. The Iowa Department of Public Health, in its own release, said it has identified 15 cases linked to the same illness and parasite.
Both departments say there appears to be a link to consumption of McDonalds salads. The departments say McDonalds is also investigating and has been fully cooperating with state health officials, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration.
The Illinois cases date back to mid-May and the Iowa ones to late June.
People can become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the microscopic parasite.
The most common symptom is watery diarrhea. Other symptoms could include appetite and weight loss, intestinal pain, nausea and fatigue.

"The most common symptom is watery diarrhea. Other symptoms could include appetite and weight loss, intestinal pain, nausea and fatigue."That happens half the times I go to a fast food place and I don't normally have the salad.

It starts with a slight fever and dryness of the throat. When the virus penetrates the red blood cells, the victim becomes dizzy, begins to experience an itchy rash, then the poison goes to work on the central nervous system, severe muscle spasms followed by the inevitable drooling. At this point, the entire digestive system collapses accompanied by uncontrollable flatulence. Until finally, the poor bastard is reduced to a quivering wasted piece of jelly.

Selling fresh vegetables is a very high risk, and low reward, business.
That isn’t recognized in prices for produce. It should be.

I never get raw vegetables from any fast food joint, and rarely at restaurants. This type of thing seems to happen more eating out. The recent romaine thing wasn’t, though.

Good advice, badger. The Wendy's we go to (for years now), never had a problem. They know my voice when I place my order.
Son loves their chile, grandson digs the cheeseburger kids meal, and I usually stick to the salads. Their burgers are too salty for me.
We're kind of stuck now, our kitchen's being remodeled, won't have a stove for another two weeks. I suppose I could BBQ outside, but I'm too lazy, and it's too damn hot!!! lol
BTW, the Chick Fil A "market salad" is similar to the Berry Burst salad.
